Choosing a sponsor is one of the most important ingredients for success, in my opinion. I would say it depends on your experience, your desires or outcomes you are seeking, what kind of support you need, and effort you are willing to put out. I also will say that if you ask for the things below you need to commit to your sponsor and yourself that you will do whatever it takes to succeed!
I was fortunate to find the right person as my sponsor. Since that day, only a short period of time ago- we have become very good friends and business partners in the strongest sense. I have others on my team that I am having the same kind of relationship with.
Here are a few questions I would ask prospective sponsors:
* Do you have a written plan that I should follow the first 30-60 days?
*Do I have to pay for a back office?
*Will I get a tailor made website that is made for me with my own picture, email address and phone number?
*Are there webinars and conference calls with real substance that I can bring my prospects to for both the business opportunity calls and the retail membership product?
*Are you available to help me with three way calls with my prospects while I am still learning to help me bring prospects into the business?
*Does your group provide a means to help me do a written business and life plan to help me succeed?
*Is there real, tangible sales training available?
*If I am on a limited budget- how exactly would I be able to succeed in this business?
*a strong sponsor should be able to be a strong mentor- so it might be good to ask them about their other business experience, as well.
Finally- with the right sponsor you will be spending time with the person. If they are not asking you about your goals and dreams, or willing to get to know you as a person and what is important in your life, and willing to have a discussion about value systems and how they support their team- I would not join with them, personally. As a sponsor I will be investing my time to help my team members be successful- and I have found it is much more comfortable when I get to know them as a person.
These are just a few of the questions that come to mind. In my own interview process I found there were few that could address the questions above.

I will also say this- any program comparisons extend beyond just the product- there is no question that one has to exert their own effort to succeed- there is also no question a great sponsor, great support and the right philosophy can assist one in being successful.
Acid test- ask all the questions above of your sponsor- and go in depth about the product. If they can answer those questions and actually have knowledge of their product also, you will find yourself in a much better place than if you did not!

I totally agree with you Chad, these questions are very important to seek the best mentor. The best mentor does not mean the most popular one, because in most cases, if they get too much business, they tend to have less time to train you and support you. Make sure that he picks up your phone call most of the times that you call him and that it doesent feel impossible to get in touch with him/her. Plus you have to get alongwith each other. Also make sure that they can always make money off of you because he will then put more effort into coaching you. Because the more money you make, the more money he makes!
Second point I want to make here is... Make sure that the business you chose if right for you. In order to make real money, you really have to believe in your product/company. Do not think that because you chose the best mentor out there that he will make u rich. Yes it does help but most of you're chances to success depends on you! If you believe in yourself, in your product/company and you are self motivated, the limit is the sky! I personally hand pick my team, because my startegy goes way further than to just make a living with this business.
Mentors, there are plenty out there, but which one is right for you?

Thank you MCLW- you are correct in your assessment about the corrrect product- AND in my opinion, the correct compensation plan that gives everyone an incentive to "pay it forward" and make sure their affiliate partners succeed that they bring into the business- is imperative.
I know I researched for months before I found the right product that I could really believe in, coupled with the right compensation plan that values the "pay it forward" approach and rewards mentoring. To many sponsors will take any and all on their front line also- it takes restraint to sometimes place someone below you, even if you do not make money on them individually, but boy does it speak volumes to your team when you lead by example!
Help others... and with the right philosophy and follow through on your own and those you mentor... you will also help yourselves!
This is the way network marketing is meant to be- there are to many that do not follow through on it.

I couldn't agree more. I have the experience of a great mentor/team and one that was not so great.
It is of great importance to have a written plan and/or materials to get you started. In addition frequent training should be provided to foster continued growth as you gain experience.

This is great advice here. I joined under sponsors when I first started and never heard from them. I would send emails and never get an answer. I do not depend on my sponsor to build my business, but when you have an active sponsor answering questions and helping you learn things it makes it a whole better experience.
If you have a relationship with your referrals and show that you really care about them, then they will trust you in the future. Too many people out there get referrals and then leave them on there own. I bet the drop out rate for people who help there referrals is a lot less then those who ignore there referrals.
