Using Keywords Correctly

I have noticed that there is a lot of confusion about the use of keyworks going around and you find bits and pieces of information here and there. I thought it would be good to bring all the main points here so we can have a reference.

First things first,

If you don't have quality content then good and revelant keywords are useless

When trying to find keywords to use try to remember these 4 little tips.

1. Do not use broad keywords

Using broad keywords will put you into direct competition with the big dogs. If you are a newbie then this is an area you will want to stay clear of at least for now. You will get lost in the massive overflow of information.

2. Do not use one word keywords

Once again, you will get lost in the information because the competition is fierce.

3. Do not use keywords that have either too low or too high competition.

Here you see there is discernment that is needed when selecting keywords. Try not to pick a keyword that is under 300 or over 10,000. Now the 10,000 number is a touchy subject since everyone has different ideas. But for now you can stick to these and always experiment to see what works for you.

4. Try to use keywords that have at least 3 to 4 words, making them phrases

Your longer keywords allows you be unique and helps you to find an open window in Google. If you are unique and find something that is not oversaturated then you just gave Google a good reason to index you.

And remember that keywords and/or keyword phrases are words that describe what you are talking about. These are the words that people are going to type in to find what they are looking for.

There are many other things that can be said here but I just wanted to keep it simple and give a chance to everyone else to add to it, so maybe it can help you to get a better PR.

Hi Gridellas,

All good points. To that I would add:

1. With new sites and sites with a PR of less than 3, don't try to rank for more than one phrase per page. Obviously there would be exceptions where you might try to rank for two or even three phrases on a given page, but be selective about that decision.

2. Don't be afraid to try to rank for phrases that don't show up in keyword tools once in a while provided that you are "sure" it will draw traffic (though the default choice is to choose phrases with some monthly search traffic and very low to moderately low competition).

3. Use several free tools. After you start making a few hundred a month for three or more months, consider investing in a paid keyword tool. It can be a software program or on online tool. While none of the paid tools are magical, they can add new dimensions to your campaigns

4. Don't be afraid to add text before and/or after your phrase if you are writing articles and descriptions for your web pages. These are for human eyes whereas the bare in demand phrases - those without text before and/or after - are for search engines alone.

5. Think like your customer when deciding upon the wording for you pages. What do they want? How can you present it in a deliciously, tempting format?

6. Don't forget to include a call to action - be it strong or subtle. Tell your visitor what you want them to do. Most of the time, I prefer to pre-sell through the use of a subtle call to action. Be sure to experiment to see what works best for you.

7. Don't become overly dependent upon any of your tools. Learn the whys behind the methods and learn to do footwork. Don't be too mechanical. Thrive on creativity and think outside of the box. Thrive on the Engineer's approach.

8. Don't rip off another's work. Do your own work. It's okay to read for inspiration. It isn't hard to rewrite things if you need them for various article directories. Just make a few alterations and submit unique versions to directories that really count. Use your brain with this. There's no need to submit to very many directories. There aren't that many good ones out there.

Put the full, best version on your own site and wait for it to get indexed before you submit to article directories.

9. Don't let anyone convince you that your idea won't work if you feel fairly confident that it will work.

10. Enjoy your work as you would any hobby. Be sure to vary your tasks throughout each day. Smile, I promise it won't hurt a bit ;)

Here is an instance... for my furniture sites, if I use just 'dressers' it is way too broad - like a million searches at seobook.com, and I can't compete at all, but then I narrow it down to wood dresser and then I have about 22,000 searches on that - still a lot of competition, I think, so I keep digging and lo... if I go with rustic dresser I still have enough searches and not as much competition ... so it pays to dig thru the keywords till you find a few phrases that people are searching for and get very targeted traffic.

A 1000 highly targeted hits is worth more than a hundred thousand hits from places you have no idea where!

Also, you can use supporting keyword phrases to further optimize your content.

For example:

If your main keyword phrase is "online piano lessons" and you use secondary phrases like "digital piano lessons" and "tips for piano lessons", you could be walking a thin line and risk being penalized for stuffing your content with "piano lessons".

But if you used related phrases like "piano instructions", "learning the piano", and "jazz piano exercises" in the same content, these are related expressions that readers would expect to find. They compliment your main keyword phrase and the search engines will reward you.

Great guys. I am very much happy to see a lot of us are participating in this sub forum.

I don't have any thing to say, as everything that I had in mind was discussed. Just a small word - Consult your web analytics data and you would get tonns of ideas for new and good converting keywords.

I try to keep my long tail key phrases to a competition under 5000. It is worthwhile to experiment with the root word and get a couple of variations that I then key into Adword keywords, and Wordtracker that are both free tools to check on the searches. The number of people who search for it should be at least 300. Did s.b. learn s.th. different? Roseanne
