I'm new here, obviously, no need to point out the obvious or get into my sad little story...but I will anyway. ; )
I'm a stay at home mom (shock, surprise and all that good stuff) and I want to work at home. My darling other half was laid off due to all the rain/flooding so he won't be going back any time soon. I've wanted a job anyway, I'm independent like that, and being a mom is good and all, but is it so wrong to want my own money?
Here's my dilemma. With there being no income and unemployment not kicking in yet, I don't have money to invest in a business (I'm not stupid, I know there's plenty scams).
I want to start with a job to earn money, then ease into a business, because I'm the type of girl where I have ideas and dreams and goals. I want eggs, not a rock. I want my dreams to hatch, not something that is, yes sturdy, but holding me down all my life.
Another little dilemma, I don't have too much experience outside of family work. My mother is really into work at home stuff, so had me do a lot of research so I'm fairly good at that and I researched wholesale sites and put products in her website. I've made phone calls, I've sold things, I help with odd jobs here for hauling and whatnot (also mostly do phone work and search out the jobs) but I want something for myself. I can do research but I'm mostly a 'get out there and do it(or learn it first if I have to) kinda girl.
I'm kind of hoping for something that doesn't require a phone line, as I have a 4 month old who thinks I'm his entertainment system (and I only have a cell phone) but a land line can be put in on the credit card (yay, more debt) if I know for sure I'll make money relatively quick.
I know it takes work, and trust me, I've always worked for anything I've gotten in my life. But a lot of times, hard work doesn't always pay off because someone lies to you. I'm a fairly honest person and I like helping out and I'm hoping someday I'll make enough money to return the favor, but it takes one step at a time. My question is...what is the best first step to take? I need something that doesn't require an investment right now, hopefully no phone but can be negotiable, I can invest a good bit of hours as long as I pick them, full time, and decent enough pay. Too much to ask for? I think it's good to at least know what you want, as long as there's a bit of room for negotiations.

Yes, it is really hard to find anything legit that does not take some investment. There are some that say they are free, but when it comes right down to it, they either cost some money somewhere or you have to work a long time to see any money come in...
There are some low cost options out there and if you have been doing any amount of research, you have very likely seen a lot of stuff.
The free ebook I have listed below, is designed more toward folks that are IN network marketing already and are just needing training on how to do online marketing , etc... but if you want me to, I can send you a link to some really good training calls that can help you understand the different comp plans and why some work and others don't,etc...
I like your energy so whatever you pick to go with - as long as you are coachable and trainable, you should be fine

Hello Naitryn,
There are many options available to you, but just from reading the post you wrote, I have two recommendations.
The first option is freelance writing. You short little post was unique, informative, and actually entertaining. I like your writing style. If you enjoy writing then this could be a good option. Sites like elance and Associated Content pay you to write short articles. The pay is not a lot, but enough to add a little income.
The other option is affiliate marketing. You said you have done some work before putting products on websites, so you already have experience and would do great with this. You can do some research for free and learn more about doing this. If you do decide to spend a little money, then I would recommend Wealthy Affiliate. I am using it and it helps me through the process quite well. Since you have experience, you would be one step ahead of everyone else. Also, the pay for this option has the potential to be A LOT.
So....you write well, so that could be a free option. Affiliate marketing could also work out for you. It all depends on what you want to do and how much effort you put into it. With your good attitude I am sure you will succeed, though. Good luck and keep us posted!

Why fatman (no insult intended) *bats eyelashes* However did you know I adore writing?
I've come across places that is such as that, but they usually require writing samples, and I've written mostly entertainment pieces such as poems and the like.
Another one of my issues is ADD. I can research a lot of things but something *shiny* shoots across my line of sight and I'm like a cat with a play toy, completely forgetting I'm trying to get the bird. I know, a gross analogy, but in a way, aren't we all predators hunting for the perfect (and hopefully delicious ^_^) job?
*sigh* If only so many people didn't require writing samples, I'd love to be a writer.

LOL, some more entertaining writing.  I can see that you enjoy it, and again you have a fun style, so I do think that freelance writing is the way to go for you. Yes, many places want you to submit sample writings, but I don't think you will have a problem with it. It does not need to be the best writing ever, just good quality and you will do fine.
This is also a good choice to help with your ADD. You can write whenever ever you feel like it and still have time for those shiny objects. Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh my, but you ARE a writer... There are ways to use that writing talent to make money. You might want to try making a Squidoo lens and using your talent there as you can pretty much pick and choose what to write about and it's all free to do as far as building the lens and all...
There is a place on here that is strictly for Squidooers - and newbie shield is the expert on that so go find him and pick his brain..

Brain picking? How did you know I like brains as much as I like birds?
But are there places that accept more....fun pieces than just educational? I think if I wrote a politics piece I would get more or, more likely, tick so many people off, which would result in their responses and I would have to respond.....it would be a series of politics. Let's not turn the world toward the dark side.

Your writing is as good as it is entertaining. You are in fact way ahead of most because of that. The truth of the matter is that good copy is what sells.
Unfortunately, there is more to it than that. Education first. Put the horse before the cart and never the other way around. Good writing is an enormous advantage but there are several other things to take into account.
Many fail because they learn a few things and get hyped up by false gurus. They think that because they have read a few things and need to make money, they can just go out and wing it. They end up making little or no money.
Understand that it takes several months just to begin to really identify the main marketing components and to generally grasp them. Then it takes several more months to drill down into each component. After that, more time still in researching, planning, and implementing your first micro campaign.
Then comes the real learning and tweaking. Then comes the significant monetizing.
So, we are all looking at a good one year plus before we have any success worth discussing.
Still, it's well worth it if you love to write, know a fair amount about or would like to learn about one or more topics. It's good that you have some knowledge and experience. You are coming here in a better position than most. It's great that you are good at writing and that you love to write. That may turn out to be your most valuable skill.
If you dig through this helpful forum, you'll find that it's important to learn about on page SEO, off page SEO, writing, traffic generation, and so on. So, first identify these components. Then learn about each component, etc (as I have mentioned above).
Mountainmom is right, after you understand the basics well, you can experiment with the free web 2.0 platforms such as Squidoo and blogs in order to learn without draining your bank or botching an investment. Free web 2.0 platforms are the perfect starting point after you are ready to experiment and get some hands-on.
I too love to write and I consider it one of my most valuable skills by far.
I have a feeling that you will enjoy the entire process tremendously and you have our full support. Feel free to poke around for a while and then ask some questions.
Try to understand that you won't "make money soon enough". That approach will almost certainly fail. If you need money "soon enough" you'll have to take an hourly job or a paid project. That's the painful truth. If you value your family, don't rely on making money online "soon enough".
