I have been thinking of setting up a affiliate marketing website promoting 20 kinds of products such as Accessories, Books & Media & Travel just too name a few, Each product would have it's own dedicated page so that web surfers would have easy access to the products. Do you think this is a good idea or should I market less products on this site.

Having such a wide variety of items on your site is going to be terribly difficult to get traffic and rankings unless you have an awful lot of money to spend on advertising.
You would be much better off choosing one topic or theme (niche) and then promoting products related to that theme.
The only way it could realistically work for you is if the accessories, books, media, and travel were all relating to one particular theme.
For example, American girl accessories, American girl books, American girl videos/DVD's/Software, American girl travel to shows or the headquarters, etc.
That's just a topic that popped into my head, but you can hopefully see what I mean. You can promote a wide variety of items if they have a common theme. Otherwise, you will never be able to compete in the marketplace.
Blessings, Angie

I would have to agree with happywife - concentrate on one niche and develop a site for that niche only. Some years ago I had a go at one or two of these 'ready made' affiliate shopping malls selling just about anything (one was called CB mall - selling Clickbank products). It simply didn't work, the only ones making money were the vendors selling these 'virtual malls'.
Build a site for each niche, provide content and information on that subject alone, of course, once that is successful you can 'rinse and repeat' and go on to build as many sites in as many niches as you like.

Hey guys thanks the advice I didn't think about that when you were talking about rankings & driving traffic too your site, I guess the only thing I may find a bit difficult is too decide what too actually market but I guess I could market several areas that interest me.

That might be partials right and partially wrong; it all depends on how you want to look at it.
One school advocates marketing a product that you love to talk about or you have tried and like. Which is good, there is nothing bad about this idea.
So you look for a product that you have used and love. This makes it easy for you to talk about the products, its benefits, how to use it, its advantages and disadvantages and such stuff.
I think the best strategy here is to talk about the product and casually offer it as a recommendation (affiliate link) without making it look like you are hard selling.
The other school of thought suggests that you look for those products that people are desperately looking for - - That they can do an impulse buying without much thought - - because they desperately need that product to solve their immediate/urgent need. something like a computer software program to clean an infested computer.
You might want to visit online groups like yahoo, google, ebay, amazon and others to see what people in those communities are frequently talking about as a basis of what to promote.

Surely you are referring to a landing page rather than an actual full blown site?
On your site in you sig., you promote more than one product don't you?

Hi Casper,
As mentioned, if the products are related, it could work out quite well.
I also agree that a person shouldn't normally put several products on one page (though you can and should place several products throughout your multi-paged site).
Squidoo would be an exception. It is common and effective to offer several products on this type of setup.
It's true that if you know your topic and have used the products that you are promoting, your readers will know.
Quality of content is the most important thing you can offer your visitors. SEO - both on site and off - is up there as well.
Focus on giving your visitors a reason to talk about your site and to return.

I would narrow it down, too. Unless you sell travel product, travel books, travel this and that.

Personally, I would have a website, Hub Page or Squidoo Lens or a blog about each topic seperately. This will allow you to focus on your key phrases and your traffic will be more relevant to your product offers. Having these subjects split up, you may get more traffic simply by having more sites. Yes this would be a full on web page & yes I do promote many different products on my site, However Amazon is giving me headaches at the moment because of their shipping policy. They only tend too ship some products here too Australia & as I live in a remote area it would be a bit misleading too say that people in my area can buy anything online through my business.
I did post a thread in this forum too see if there is a alternative too Amazon so if you can help that would be great.

I would say to promote one product or similar products per webpage. Pick a niche and go with it for that particular site. Use keywords related to that niche. Wish you the best.

Actually, that comment was to pcwork who was suggesting that you only promote one product on your whole site. I was trying to clarify.
As for your site, the advice we have all given is important. If you are referring to the site in your signature (shopping site), you will have a terrible time getting rankings and traffic to that site without paying for it.
If you are in Australia and are wanting to promote local (Australia-based) products, you should look into Australia affiliate networks like Commission Monster.
If you sign up as an affiliate with them you can browse through and find stores that sell items related to a SPECIFIC NICHE that you want to promote.
Build a site around a specific topic and then find affiliate products that relate to it. Unless you have a lot of money to sink into advertising, I can almost guarantee that you will not do well with a general shopping site like you've got.
I'm sorry if that is terribly disappointing, but I think most marketers would back me on this. Put your energies into something that really does have potential and you will do well.

I thought I'd let you know that since my site launched on April 8 I have had 273 hits on my site, It may not sound much but I have been using mainly fee advertising like in this forums & e-mail press releases. I'm thinking of joining wealthy affiliates as my other business is having issues as you may be aware in my previous post.
I did do a search for affiliate programs here in Australia & too tell you the truth there were not that many, However I did find some useful affiliate directories which have been of some use.

Congratulations Casper! It's encouraging to see some progress, isn't it? What site are you referring to?
Did you check out Commission Monster in Australia? They may have something suitable for your niche.

I agree with happywife. It is better to concentrate one product at a time rather than promoting multiple product at a time.

one product or similar products per page is good. Four products/site makes your work easy and better.

Well that depends on how important rankings are to you.
You can do well as an affiliate without having a top-ranking web site, just by putting yourself in front of people who would want your product/s.
Eg. if you're selling surf products, do a joint venture with a webmaster of a surf site or forum, where he lets you put up a link in exchange for a cut of the profits. Or join the surf forum yourself and put an affiliate link in your sig. Simple.
My point is that Google page rank is not the beginning and end of internet marketing.
Oh....you can also try a Google Adwords campaign, but make sure it's highly targeted. Don't ever use broad matching wth Adwords.

I think you may have missed the point of the initial question and the following responses. I think Caspar was asking if it's a good idea to have many 'unrelated' products on one site with a page for each.
My response was that it would be a lot better for the products to be related (like in your surf example).
Sure, you can get some traffic from forum posting, but I get far more free targeted traffic from the search engines than from any other source.
Most people don't have someone to joint venture with starting out and wouldn't know how to go about setting something up initially either, although it is a good option.
I just wouldn't lightly dismiss rankings in the search engines, unless, as I said earlier you, want to spend a lot of money on advertising.

I would absulutely have seperate websites for each category. Then you can choose a related domain name , get related backlinks and the list goes on. Victoria

Well, you're right, of course, page rank IS definitely of some importance, but I've seen people lose their page rank (and business) overnight when Google decides to modify its algorithms again.
So I'm only saying we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket. If you rely on page rank for most of your traffic, then the future of your business is on shaky ground.
I would suggest that a more prudent solution is to build up solid backlinks from other related websites that you know will still be there next month, and then just accept any natural google traffic as an added bonus that could come and go at any time but won't cripple you if it suddenly disappears.
Anyway, just my opinion and personal experience.
