We are moving almost 2 hours away, but I LOVE and will miss my flex-schedule. I have yet to tell the bosses, but since it appears I do need to continue making $, I would love to see if I can take this show on the road.
Has anyone here successfully/unsuccessfully negotiated working from home? What steps did you take to propose WAH and what did your bosses agree/disagree with?
The challenges I face are some confidentiality (employee salaries) and deadlines where I may need to come into the office at least 2-4 times a month (OK by me). The function I am responsible for is payroll and some HR functions. I process EVERYTHING via e-mail and some phone, so on the surface it seems it can be done. Also, there are many other WAH employees with this large company, though not in my section per se.
Does anyone have any tips, references or info you'd like to share?

Welcome, first of all, Cin...
So are you talking , like , working from home as an employee...? I know it has been done...what I do is my own business but I don't know why it couldn't work - especially if you are a valuable employee that they don't want to lose!
Maybe someone else will stop by that has more experience than I have in that area.... good luck!

Yes, I would like to work at home as there is no other office closer to our future home where I could work remotely from.

Hello Cin,
Welcome to the forum. I would think you would have a good chance of getting the bosses to approve, especially if they already are familiar with the whole concept as you implied.
Perhaps you can approach them with a conditional/temporary agreement. Propose a trial to show that you can still accomplish the same work at a distance. If they are happy with your continued service at the end of a month or two all is well, if not, you agree to hand in your resignation.
If you've done a good job so far, they probably won't want to lose you. You could be saving them the headache of finding and employing someone else. Be sure to weave that into your proposal.

I don't think there are any specialized steps that you should take. All you have to do is go to your immediate superior and ask if a situation like that could be worked out. Just say, "I very much like my job and would like to continue working it. I believe this job can be done remotely. Is there any chance that we could work out an arrangement for me to continue working my job after I move away?"
There's nothing better than straightforward honesty. I work for a company in St Louis, and one of my co-workers moved to Washington state. He's still working for us. All he did was ask.
