On this forum and all the other similar ones I read posts and threads from people seeking advice how to make money via the internet - so far so good!....
...But, what I can't understand is that so many posters are obviously not making much money or are just starting out and are seeking advice. However, in their sigs are often links to websites telling us how, if we buy their system, we can make a lot of money. To back this up are examples of Clickbank or other statements showing consistent income!
So, my question is....If these systems work why aren't the people who are promoting these schemes not pulling in a fortune themselves? Why are they not following their own promotions, why are they posting on forums hoping to get ideas how to make money online?
Very curious! Is it perhaps that this whole concept of making money online is a bit of a myth. I've never met or spoken to anyone who makes a living from IM.

Hi pastcaring,
Good points. I agree that many make little if any in online marketing. This includes those who have sigs.
I for one have been making money online for over 10 years and one of my sites (don't ask) has been up the entire time and doing well every day since the first month.
I also have several other sites that do well. I change my sig link often as I try new ways to make money. I've had my HTML Squidoo Tricks link up for a couple weeks or so as of this post. It is a free (rather than paid hosting) lens.
If you know what you are doing and you write good content, you should be able to do well. I guess that's the bottom line. The problem is that few take the time to learn before they jump in the water.
I've picked up a lot over 10+ years. I have been updating my knowledge since last summer. I have learned quite a few new things since then. I spend many hours a day just learning. It takes several hours a day for 3-4 months just to understand a little about the main components of online marketing.
Few seem willing to put in the time because the fake gurus tell them they can make money very quickly, which for 99.9% of the marketers is untrue.
I hope that sheds some light on your inquiry.

Yes, and thanks!
But it just confirms a doubt I have always held; Why, if you are making, say, $10,000 a week implementing your own fantastic system would you go through all the hassle of selling your 'unique idea' at $27 a time with all the....Anyway, you get the point!
Internet selling is no different to any other offline business - hard work!!

A lot of people have signed onto programs that promote the program they have signed onto - and nothing else! You are right, a lot of people are promoting programs as noobs and are not making money, or not much anyway. I have made some money - about $500 last year, not much, but I am learning. My advice, (for what it's worth), is sign-up for free with affiliate programs - like Clickbankand right articles and submit to ezine articles and the like with links back to the offers with your affiliate links.

You can make money online, but you have to spend a lot of time reading and experimenting. There is no get rich quick formula.

You've clearly identified an interesting contradiction.

Great questions! You're obviously a critical thinker too. 
Here's one explanation:
Most online marketing first-timers get started with affiliate programs, because...
- they can join for free
- they have a chance to make some money
- they usually get access to useful marketing resources
However, a large percentage of these newbies really know little or nothing about online marketing before they buy into the clever promotions and hypnotic copywriting.
Very soon they discover that much more than a cookie-cutter website is necessary to make any serious money online, and they go searching for answers and guidance in forums and other places.

There's nothing mythical about the concept of making money online. Lots of people are doing it everyday.

Hermas - Thanks for your reply also glad to hear that you are successful at IM!
Something else I have noticed since asking the original question is that most aspiring newcomers to IM seem to set up their affiliate programs pursuing 'How to be an IM millionaire' or 'Make money on line' etc.
Surely there must be more imaginative ways of exploiting affiliate selling? How about ethnic cooking, Triumph motor bikes, fishing for brown trout...just a thought.
Thinking about my online selling, a further point comes to mind, why is there such an emphasis on niche marketing? Surely mainstream products are the things to go for, lots of competition, yes, but popular products indicate a large demand. My feeling is to analyse your customers' needs rather than gazing at the niche navel.

Hi PastCaring,
Good observation. I advocate monetizing on what ever you are good at or wish to be good at. This usually means avoiding the selling of make money programs. Some folks are very good at making money sites. I'm not talking about them. Perhaps they have been making several hundred or somewhere over a thousand each month for a long time. They should continue doing that.
About your last point. You can have a general front page - one that is not a niche at all. Then you use longtails for your additional pages. If you are building a large site with dozens or hundreds of pages, then several of the pages can be optimized for general short phrases.
My advice is to have several sites - some of which should be free web 2.0 pages that point to your main site(s). The ultimate goal, in my opinion, is to have one or more huge sites that you build over time.
Do what you love and the money will follow.

Newbie - That makes sense.
Actually your final sentence sums it up very well, certainly it is like any enterprise - organic growth over time will establish a sound base to build on.
I think there is a perception that because you are starting an internet business somehow common business practice doesn't apply! Scammers have had a field day ripping off gullible hopefuls. Some of the garbage I get spammed with promising instant wealth is scandalous!

I thought I'd add my own little insight here, too. I think niche marketing is emphasized because it is a lot easier to gain organic traffic if you are in a smaller niche with less competition than in a larger more general niche.
So many people starting out want instant results. If they had to wait until they conquered a general niche and started generating traffic that brought them some income, most would give up before getting there. In a more narrow niche, people see "results" quicker which keeps them encouraged to hang in there and keep working.
Those who promote online marketing with a general understanding of human nature and a sincere desire to help people succeed recognize this fact and so emphasize niche marketing as the best way to go.
That's my take on the emphasis, anyway.

I agree, as my experience has mirrored that. And imagine, you have 10+ years under your belt NS, so it's not like hearing the words "keyword research", for example, is new to you.
And since this stuff takes time to even grasp the [u]basics[/u], it's sometimes the case that when a person realizes that Internet Marketing doesn't equate to getting rich quick, they give up on the idea and call the whole concept a scam.
Quite frankly pastcaring, you summed it up perfectly when you said "Internet selling is no different to any other offline business - hard work!!" If you see a signature that heavily emphasizes the "easy" and the "quick", it's more than likely not going to be posted below the words of someone who genuinely has a handle on the IM stuff because those in the know are aware of the fact that nothing about this is "quick" or "easy".
