Internet Marketing can be very complex, but it's also a great and unique way to make money on the internet. There is definitely a learning curve. I could go on and on about the many diverse ways of creating multiple streams of income with internet marketing. One of the most popular is to be an affiliate for companies that sell products or that offer services.
For example, let's say that you have a passion for movies, and that you find it very easy to write "great content" (emphases added) on movies that you watch. Well you could create your own blog or website for reviewing movies, and/or reviewing the actors in them. Now what you can do is become an affiliate for let's say Netflix dot com, and refer people to them through your website or blog. You can even write a review for Netflix and post it to your website/blog. Now you need to get traffic, and more specifically targeted traffic.
Now getting targeted traffic is definitely an art that you have to master. Here are some of the most popular ways, free and paid classifieds, blog directories, forum posting, article submission, joint ventures, your email list, SEO, social bookmarking, PPC, and much more. The trick is to do some research and then brainstorm, and if something didn't work go back to the drawing board and try, try again.
Well I hope this has helped you out in some way or another. Just remember that if you are motivated and most importantly dedicated to success then you can accomplish anything.
P.S. The key is to generate many multiple streams of income from your one website/blog.

If you want to learn how to do what he just wrote about, I'd suggest checking out Wealthy Affiliate - there is definately a lot to learn internet marketing, and there are a lot of people who will try to rip you off and sell you garbage or information that is way out of date - Wealthy Affiliate is not one of those places.

Another very important aspect of Internet Marketing is to have the determination and will-power to keep on going. If first you don't succeed, try, try again! Remember if you have the right mind-set/determination you can accomplish anything in life!

Yes, staying determined and avoiding discouragement is key. I find personally that I go in waves. I cycle up and down in motivation, and my cycle typically is no more than two days. I'll be kind of on the backburner one day then motivated the next. It's hard to stay encouraged when no sales are coming in. I'd appreciate any insights that anyone has to share on this.

Do you have certain activities in your business that you do each and every day?
The important part is to have 'income producing' activities that you do each day...
For instance, checking emails and straightening up your work space are not income producing activities (or IPA as I like to call it )!
For me, what I consider to be IPA is placing ads on craigslist, writing a few articles, calling leads, adding pages to my website that I am slowly building up, etc...
For you , it may vary from that , but do something every day! (That's where persistency comes in!)

Most beginners, unfortunately, are lured to Internet Marketing through over-hyped promotions that promise quick riches without the need to do much work.
That kind of propaganda tends to encourage a casual attitude, rather than the serious, business-like mentality that is required to succeed. So it's no surprise that the failure rate among newbies is so high.
You've heard the sayings: "Haste makes waste," and "Rome wasn't built in a day!"
There is no escaping the learning curve, and understanding the fundamentals of marketing, copywriting, targeting and the many components that contribute to online success. That process simply can't be rushed.
However, once the foundation has been poured, you can then build your business(es) to whatever size or number you desire, because then you'll know how.
My advice to beginners: Prepare for a marathon, not a sprint.

No matter who you are, principles govern!
Let's think about that for a second...
All around us, every single day, we are surrounded and influenced by governing principles. Whether in the physical, mental, spiritual, business, or "internet marketing" realm (just stop and think for a second and I'll bet you can name a few) they and their laws fully encompass us every day.
And the MOST successful people on the earth today KNOW and USE these governing principles to produce true and everlasting abundance/prosperity.
So... as we learn, grow, and experience life, we begin to recognize and apply these governing principles.
Some of us apply the right ones and some of us apply the wrong ones...
(Have you heard of the "Law of Attraction." Well... that's an example of one of these governing principles.)
So... here is a principle of internet/affiliate marketing that IS a governing principle within the internet marketing realm.
This is how you should set-up your campaign -->
Niche Market (this is your group of hungry people) --> Perfect Customer (this is "your" perfect customer within your niche market) --> Relevant Keywords (the keywords you use to promote your offers to your perfect customer) Relevant Ads & Ad Groups or Articles & Bio Boxes/Call to Action (these are the marketing techniques you use to drive your perfect customer to your landing page) --> Relevant Landing Page (this is your free blog or website where your perfect customer "lands") --> Relevant Product and/or Service Offering (this is the "relevant" product and/ or service you are promoting to your perfect customer) --> Commission (you make your money)
Oh, and one more side note: Find out WHO your perfect customer is and WHY they are buying before you promote anything... Do Your Research and APPLY The Governing Principles!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think the one thing any new person needs is a positive attitude. It can be pretty frustrating at times and you need to be able to pick yourself up and keep going.

Another extremely important principle of internet marketing is to KNOW the power that comes from Testing Your Campaigns...
An amazingly simple, fun, and great tool I suggest using is "Google Analytics"... And believe me you, this tool could double your profit margin, but first you've gotta learn the importance of testing, reading & understanding your information, and the most important of all... Patience is a word that comes to mind as I read these posts. And determination. If you know you can do it better than the rest, be patient as you build and determined to "stay the course".
As Couchie said, the get rich quick schemes are ridiculous...do you think that if I discovered a secret and got rich quick that I would "sell" that information? No, because (1) truely rich people don't have to sell their secret and (2) they don't have to resort to tatics such as limited time only deals where if you buy today only, you will receive hundreds of dollars worth of free stuff. Think about it, did Walmart become #1 by offering limited time only freebies?
