One thing that I've learned going through these boards is that you have to be willing to invest a lot of time and energy to see profits on the net. I probably would be able to commit 1-2 hours max per day on a work at home program and Im wondering if that is enough.... how much time is "enough" time?

A college student can definately make money at a home based business...and I'd recommend affilaite marketing. HOWEVER, the big thing to realize is that there is a learning curve, so don't expect to earn money overnight. Having said that, I do know of several college students who do make decent money online with affiliate marketing...but I don't think their success happened over night.

yes I totally agree with getagrip and I just want to add. Most of the time when people fail at making extra cash its because they expect to do nothing. If you really work at it you can makes some pretty good money

And I agree with what Aldanson said. That includes research as well as carefully planning and implementing campaigns.
It's been my experience on this forum that folks rarely put in the effort to do the above. They toss up a crappy page and expect a check for a million dollars within a week.
All good things take time, effort, and careful execution. There is no other way. I'm going to say it over and over again because that is what many of the members of this forum need to hear the most.
Furthermore, you noobs are competing with seasoned veterans. Do you expect to outperform them by knocking them out of the competition? Will a random visitor be compelled to trust your endorsement and then buy from you instead of a veteran?

to reiterate:
You canbut you're not going to be able to pay for college overnight. I often find some of my best downliners are college students. Primarily because of socialization sites and the such.
I would definitely stick to affiliate marketing and possibly a low priced MLM primarily because you do alot of the work upfront and then get residual. For instance if you have finals you can't spend the same amount of time obviously, so lets say during your down time you work then on your busy time you answer emails and focus less on marketing you can definately get it to work.
I personally have great weeks and weeks where I can only invest an hour or so of my time... in the end I get teh same pay...Just during those downtime my downline doesn't grow as much.

I agree with Open, college students are great because of their vast sphere of influence. I live right by a large university and have gotten many students in my downline because it's something that college students can use and is easily discussed/referred. Find a product/company that you can promote to your current surroundings and then later once you graduate.

Which ever business you start, you need to set goals as to number of hours willing to work. If you only have a few hours a week it's ok, it'll take longer to realize income goals. Just Make the BEST of your time.
Also when looking at any business check out;
1. product demand
2. compensation program
3. nitch market
4. profit margin
5. market program/system

I love what Newbie Shield said. You are so not likely to succeed, college student or not, if you expect to do it with a quickly built site of a few pages competing in a huge market. The only way I think someone can do that is if they have loads of cash to spend on advertising. Which, if you had, why would you even bother doing this?

If you are able to take the mindset that you are positioning yourself for a long term business, than I think you should definitely consider using that 1-2 hours per day on building yourself a solid website that will generate income in the long run for you. If you add a page to your site every day or even every other day, by the end of the year you will have a site of 150+ pages. That is a good way to get started. It is slow and steady, but once built, stays built.
I'm not a huge fan of MLM myself, but not because I have anything against it. It just isn't me. I'm more the stay at home type promoting things through a web site rather than trying to sell things offline, etc. Frankly, I'm not even sure I completely understand MLM!
However, I have learned to understand the concept of building a content based niche web site to be used to promote affiliate products or services, or even your own products. I especially love the fact that I can leave it for weeks, if necessary, and it continues to function and grow without me.
If you've got a particular subject or hobby that you really enjoy or are interested in, consider turning it into a business by building a site that will end up paying you for years to come.
That's just one way, I know, but it is the way that worked for me. Hope it helps you.

Most people tend to think of MLM's as pyramid schemes...which sadly some are... howerver; they are a greaet way to earn income...especially if you can't/don't spend alot of time promoting a business.
Most MLM's have a product(the trick is finding a good product that is actually in use...not a miricle vitamin or some other garbage like that) then selling the item and the idea of that Item. I use GDI(see sig link to homepage) for two reasons.
1. To be able to host a site and use said site to promote other affiliate items(click bank, amazon, etc.)
2. I promote GDI primarily because I know that creating a downline of people doing what I'm doing is the best LONGTERM goal. My Goal is to recruit 1 person a month(so far way achieving that goal) With just my recruits in a year I stand to make 300+ a month...every month...regardless of my sales amount. Couple that with the affiliate marketing I already do (on my GDI hosted site) and I'm doing ok now, but poised to do so much better in the long run.
MLM's are great if you can find one that is actually worth the effort and not SCAM. 2 tips(i work in 2 formating)
1. If there is no viable product and your main source of income comes from selling a business fee to start then you are ina scam game and your only source of income is to dupe people the way you were duped.
2. Start up costs. This goes with #1 but is very critical. Most MLM's give you the "you need to spend money to make money" line. While this is true to some extent HOW MUCH MONEY is always a crucial factor to take into account. Again if the main source of everyone's income is in recruiting new signups and getting them to pay huge amounts of money then you'd best bet your butt you're being scammed. On the other hand if the product is what is making the money then you are ok IMHO.

You might be use affiliate program to sell your services, but it's still a form of mlm or referral marketing. you'r receiving overrides.
I agree some MLM only focus efforts on recruitment rather than product/services. Our company offers a product that has a real deman and retail value. We also offer a free affiliate entry (no purchase required) with income potential $500 - $1000/sale not to mention the referral marketing income.

I offer an MLM called FriendsWin. It's great for college students because it is free to join at this time and is a social networking site like MySpace and Facebook. But FriendsWin offers you a lot more features - and pays you to socialize!

Absolutely it is an MLM, I am a huge proponent of MLMs
The money paid is part of the hosting fee. So I guess it depends on how you look at it. I pay a monthly hosting fee of 10. With that 10 comes the opportunity to create a downline and host my site. Like two birds with one stone.
Again I'm ok with paying as long as I can get value out of the product I'm paying for. And I get value out of the product.

Sorry if I offended. I did say I don't have anything against MLM personally. I didn't think they are wrong or bad or anything like that. Just not my personal thing to do. That is not to say I won't run across something that clicks with me and I'll give it a try. Who knows?
I did try GDI way back when (about a year ago), but I was just way too "green" to do anything with it other than promote it to others as a way to get their own domain. I didn't know enough about how to build a successful website to do anything with my $10 monthly domain. 
I'm glad other people are finding success with their particular MLM's. Actually quite a few of my SBI colleagues use their SBI site to promote an MLM business. SBI is more about helping you build a successful site for WHATEVER type of online business you want to get into on any subject or field. The foundation is the same, no matter how ornate the final structure.

No offense taken at all. I completely undestand the pretenses some people have about MLM's. It is actually the hardest part of any MLM...trying to convince people that you are not there to rip them off. Damn Ponzy schemes ruined it for all of us MLMers.
Sorry to hear you didn't do well with GDI. If you don't mind me asking what do you feel contributed to your lack of success... that way I can help people in my downline avoid some of the same things.
I know I lucked out with a pretty good upline willing to help.
