I have posted two sites but do not know how to get traffic. I do understand that there is pay-per-click and google adsense but I don't understand how they work. What else should I try? Please advise.

Getting targetted traffic to your website is difficult, but posting in social networking websites and message boards may help

This is true, but you need to check the forum rules first to make sure they allow you to do that. If you use forum sigs, make sure you make useful helpful posts on the forums and build a good reputation so people will want to click on your links.

Tonig,
To help you understand Pay-per-click (Adwords) and Adsense, here is a basic simplified explanation.
Google Adwords - you write an ad based on a keyword that relates to your site and then you pay Google a set price for every time someone clicks on your ad. The price varies depending on the keyword and how many other people are vying for the same word. This could get expensive, especially if you are not making a good turnover of sales from those visitors.
Google Adsense - you allow Google to put ads on your site that relate to the keywords of your page. Google pays you a percentage of the advertisers fee (mentioned above) every time someone clicks on the ad on your site. You are NEVER allowed to click on the ads on your own site to try to generate false income or encourage people to do so.
Those are the basics. Of course there is a lot more info. on how to do each of these things effectively, but at least you will know what they are.
As to generating targeted traffic, you want to try to get free traffic, but traffic that is actually visitors interested in what you're offering. This is easiest to do by creating lots of keyword focused quality content pages on your site (30-50 is a good start).
After you've done that you want to get inbound links from other related sites. You can exchange links with a few, request more from others, and even submit your site to related directories.
Also, as the others mentioned, you can promote your site by posting helpful things in forums and leaving a link in your signature, and writing articles that link back to your site.
The sad news is, everything takes work and time. Unless you are rich and can afford to buy lots of ads, you will have to have patience and persistence.
Is your site an affiliate marketing site? If it is, I've got a free ebook that will help you understand the whole process better. If you'd like it, just email me and I will post the link back to you.
Don't be discouraged. Just keep at it.

Toning You could also try some of the paid to read sites. I've found a couple where you can earn a few dollars and then use it to pay for the advertising. It takes time but if you don't have a lot of money it's one way to go.
If I did this right there should be one in my signature. If your interested in a couple more just send me an email and I'll send you the links.

Starting the advertising part of your internet marketing business with pay per click can be risky, whether you have money to spend or not.
I lost almost $500 my first night because I did not understand what I was doing. You are better off to try a few free or nearly free methods of promotion and take some time and learn more about ppc advertising.

I agree with Jeff, ppc takes awhile to really learn. Best to start with a $10 a day maximum if you are going to try it.
Also another great method of advertising is Ezines. It's possible to advertise with almost any budget, starting at about $10 and up to over 100 and more. Many Ezines have thousands of readers.
It's one of my favorite methods of advertising.
