Is there some kind of numerical guideline for what a niche is? Ie, how many searches per month vrs how many search results on google?

A niche is generally a subject which only a limited number of people are likely to be interested in

well, yes... this much I had figured out. But when I am researching keywords, how do I know when it is the right ratio?

It is better to write on subjects you are interested in, your content is more likely to be unique

It is not easy to define it that way. When you analyze key words using Word tracker you can get an idea about the number of competing sites, count and the Key word Effectiveness Index (KEI). It is better to choose those with less competition. But at the same time it has to be a subject in which you are interested in. You have to strike a balance somewhere.

yes, makes sense. Is there any guideline like "try to get something with less than 1,000,000 search results? I think I read that somewhere....

It would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a magic number for search results that would certify the viability of any particular niche. The number would be meaningless if it weren't considered with other relevant information.
For example:
In one niche, keyword/keyphrase searches of 500,000 might be considered excessive because of the small size and demand in that niche. Whereas, the same number in a larger niche could be seen as ideal.
Reminds me of the story of the six blind men describing an elephant.
The fisrt happened to fall against the broad sturdy side and said the elephant is like a wall.
The second felt the smooth, round sharp tusk and declared an elephant is like a spear.
The third felt the trunk which reminded him of a snake.
The fourth felt the knee and thought it was like a tree.
The fifth touched the ear and said it resembled a fan.
The sixth groped the tail and compared the elephant to a rope.
Even though they were each only partly right, all of them were completely wrong.

1. Don't be afraid on competition...who cares how many other site there are...just make your better
2. While it is good advice to start with a niche you passionate about, you also want to make money.
3. Taks action...just get out there and do something

good... this is very helpful.
I think the subject I chose for my first site was not enough of a niche - but I really wanted to do a site on that subject so, oh well. There are 3,880,000 results coming up on google search for my keywords. But on the front page of google, none of the pages are what someone who typed those keywords would really be looking for.
I will continue to post articles, blogs, and links while I work on improving my site. Thanks again to all of you. It's encouraging!

That's great news! But are you confident on capitilizing on those keywords? I mean have you targeted any affiliate programs or do you have a product in mind? Also, do you have an estimate of number of searches per day for your keyword and the amount of traffic you might expect? It's vital to do a thorough research initially so that you won't repent later.
In case you don't know, Google has a free keyword suggestion tool that you can use for researching. Also, if there are no or very few adwords advertisers, you can also spend some on adwords advertising to analyze the traffic.

Yes - I thought about adwords, then someone else said it's better to do that when you can spend lots on trying different key words.
Yes, the keyword is a specific product which is a bit hard to find. If you go to pricegrabber or something you don't find it easily. I only found a variety of items after hours of searching in google - actually I was shopping for the item myself at first. That's where I got the idea.
But maybe there's not enough searches per month for this keyword. Overture says 400-600 per month.
But it's kind of too late, I already made the website before I knew better. I have affiliate links to 10 companies in there now.
I've submitted 3-4 articles to about 10 different places. One of them was downloaded over a hundred times, from just a couple of the article sites which I checked. I found my articles on several websites so far.
My webstat program shows me I get visitors from these articles, but on a good day I have like 7 or 9 visitors! Maybe that's pathetic?
Now I'm a little unsure ... should I keep going with this site now that I started? Ie, SEO, more promotion, more affiliate links, upgrade the appearance, etc?
Or should I put it on the backburner and use wordtracker to find some better keywords and start over?

Overture results are usually on the higher side as a part of these queries are also made by advertisers to check out bids and competitors. Wordtracker results is more reliable.

For a tight niche, the results are not pathetic at all. However, a lot depends on the source of your visitors. If they came from reading your articles, a lot of them may be just curious about your website/business.
Regarding tweaking your site, based on the number of visitors you are getting, it's too early. Wait until you start getting significant number of visitors from search engines. Then you can come to a conclusion whether your idea is feasible or not. That's the reason I mentioned about adwords. You don't have to wait that long to check out your site's feasibility.

This is really helpful!
So, maybe I could test out a few adword campaigns and see what traffic it generates? Do you think I have to spend a lot of money before I get enough data?
I will go to wordtracker the next time I have time.
Several websites are linked to my article in enzine articles, so the reader starts to read it, then goes to enzine articles if he wants to finish reading it. So the clicks from enzine articles might be from people who started out in other sites...

If you are thinking of using Google Adsense as an income generator (ie displaying relevant Adwords ads and being paid per click) then you might want to base your site around a higher earning subject. Niche sites may not earn as much because the cost of niche Adwords is lower.
Adwords will cost more for more popular keywords and so your earnings per click will probably be higher as well.
Unfortunately it will be more difficult to attract visitors to your site because you will then suffer more from competition for popular keywords.
It's difficult to know which way to go - Niche = more targeted visitors, but lower quantity, and lower earnings from Adsense.
However affiliate links targeted at your specialised vistors may prove very profitable.

I do have affiliate links, that's the main potential income of this site (it has some adsense too, but that's on the bottom).
My articles are generating traffic and additional links as time goes on, and I am getting more visitors as time goes on... but the MSN KEI on wordtrackers is .863! Not so great. I do think my site is more helpful than any of the others on the first few pages of google, for someone who would type in those keywords.
Then I found a keyword with an MSN KEI of 169. But the "24 hours" rating was 2, competing was 0. People looking for this term would mostly want info, not to buy something necessarily. Maybe I could make a blog with adsense ads...
A google search for that gives 682,000 results, and overture says 642 searches per month... so I'm thinking of starting a blog on this subject concurrent,, while I see how my other website does.

I just wanted to say - in case anybody who helped on this thread is still around, that my site made it up to #6 in google a few days ago. Which is great. Now it is back to #26 ... but I must be doing something right. Only problem is there are very few people searching for it!

its nice to see people experimenting, it is something i should do more of as i have put all my eggs in one basket at the moment and so far that basket hasn't been as profitable as it could be. However the earning curve i have taken is priceless as wen i started i didn't know a thing about making money online

I think that an unique selling proposition is the way to go for a successful site. People come to you for your unique item or piece of information and your goal is to keep them coming for more. Placing adsense and affiliate codes are part of the deal but once you have hungry visitors, they will value your comments and stay in your site and buy items you sponsor or support. Staying involved is also key. Seek to learn and learn to seek. There is a wealth of information on the web so the trick is to choose what is effective at the right time. When you do something that you are passionate about, people will come to appreciate that and recognize you for it.

A niche is just a body of knowledge in a particular area. Working at home is a niche, boating is a niche, carpentry is a niche. The key to successful sales is to differentiate which means you first start with a BROAD niche such as "work at home" and then dig deeper and define it further. "Work at Home Moms" or "Work At Home Internet Based Business".
The further you fine tune your niche the more profitable you will be assuming you get in front of the correct audience. So just define your niche to the point that you are one in a thousand instead of one in ten who are doing it. Then find a group of people that are looking for that specific niche and sell away! It may mean you have less people on your e-mail lists but you will have a more pertinent audience that should purchase more often.
