Hi All,
I've been to many a website where the owner asks for voluntary donations (usually $1-5) to "support the site" or keep it "ad free" (though the site may actually be promoting an affiliate product). Just wondering if any of you employ that technique and whether you've seen any positive results with it.
Personally I've never donated a dime to anything like that, but admit I was tempted on a few (rare) occasions.

ya i have seen that too. some of my friend put that on their site. i dont see they make quite good income by doing that...

I have seen that before. But there are some sites that are providing free software that are useful to us. I think they deserved the money as if there are no such software around. We will end up paying more to buy the software.

I've never tried it, although you could always test it out to see what kind of results you get.

I need a website first. 
Still in the research/planning stages (I'm a scientist, we're big on that sort of thing).

Hi Dr_Boo,
I've heard various success stories with that approach. It succeeds or fails for the same reasons that other types of monetization succeed or fail.
It worked well in the 1990's but it may work well in certain niches such as the science community.
You might include a short bit of text explaining that the site (and perhaps your projects) relies on donations for whatever reason.
I would also include an explanation some where on your ABOUT page. It would be a good idea to include the benefits of your site and in donating to your cause. People respond better to benefits and a bit of casual persuasion.
Bottom line = you'll have to try it and see. It may work well in one setting and not work at all in another. You can always either add or substitute something else later on.
It may work better than average in your niche.
