I heard a story once obout a man who placed an ad in several newspapers selling copper engravings of Abraham Lincoln for $1. When the people who saw the ad and wanted to buy one sent in thier dollar to the address, they later got a penny in the mail from the man.
I don't know if this is true or just an urban legend. I thought of it the other night though, as I looked around clickbank for possible products to promote.
I came across a product which believe it or not promised to cure all diseases, including cancer in one minute. I don't know what the product is, if it's just a gimmick to build a list, or what. I would be willing to bet that it does not cure cancer though.
What I think disturbed me the most is that the total gravity for the thing was over 4000. That made me think of the story from before, and I wondered if some people think we must check our conscience at the door when we become an internet marketer.
I'm not saying that every thing you push has to be the best product on the market in that industry. I understand salesmanship, but I don't want to see us become like the used car salesman that everyone in town hates to go to and only does so when they are desperate.
Most people don't know affiliate marketing even exist. They have probably bought through one of us and never known. I would hate to see us become the people everyone tries to avoid and no one trusts.
Just a thought.

I'm really glad to hear you say that. Unfortunately, a lot of affiliate marketers don't seem to have any ethics - they lie, copy, cheat, steal, and market products they know are bogus. Not everyone has to be that way - we can choose to do our due dilegence and market only quality products we truly believe will help people.

Great Post, both of you!
I would be interested in looking at this product. Just curious.
You get what you think about whether wanted or not. So, it makes perfect sense to be ethical.
For if a marketer or anyone else cheats or hurts another, she/he would have to think about it (a little, at least) to do it in the first place.
Like what goes around comes around.

Integrity is my biggest catch word. There are many marketers that do things that definitely hurt affiliate marketing. Unfortunately that is the nature of any business. There will be honest people as well as those not so honest. I cant speak for anyone else but as far as how I run my business I try my bes to do onto others as Id like them to do onto me. I was part of an organization that was making me consistently $1500 a month and had to leave as I felt that some of their practices werent of the highest integrity. Yes losing the money hurt but my piece of mind is worth a heck of a lot more then $1500.
I will say that as the economy has changed and jobs arent as readily available as they used to be the home based business arena has been given a second look by many that didnt see it as a viable option in the past. 20 years ago I was in Amway and had trouble in the beginning getting people to believe it was a "real" business. Well just a few weeks ago I saw a Mary Kay advertisement on tv right after I saw an Amway and then an Avon commercial. As the saying goes "You have come a long way baby". Working from home in network and affiliate marketing is here to stay and will continue to grow and flourish.

Hi everyone, This is my first post to introduce myself. I agree with thomnel53 that there are tooooo many scam artists out there and the only way to combat that is to be the real deal. If there is such a thing as bad karma a lot of people have got it coming!! For me, I just want to start an ethical, helpful online business sharing ideas, knowledge and opportunities with like minded people. I wish us all good luck. Stu

The above story (true or false) is certainly interesting. Even though the actual product may not have been what buyers expected, the "copper engraving" description is certainly accurate. But it does raise the question of ethical standards as it relates to an expectation of fairness.
thomnel53: I wondered if some people think we must check our conscience at the door when we become an internet marketer. As internet marketers, or as people in general, we should never check our conscience at the door. It is our moral compass. It gives us perspective, boundaries and direction. These elements are critical to the guidance system we use to monitor ourselves.
Without conscience we would descend into chaos!

Interesting post.
Whether the internet marketer have conscience or not, it is up to the buyer to believe. For those who don't believe, most probably they won't buy. Even in the real world, there are cases like that.

Eventually, all AM will pay by not adhering to an ethic standard. Their reputation will be ruined on the long run if they offer products that don't deliver what they promise. For me, it is about integrity, and trustworthyness because I would like to be around for a long time.
