Probably sound a but thick here, but what is whois and what is it's purpose? I only ask because I have Google alerts set up on some domain names I own and one came back today from Whois.
Thanks as always.

WHOIS allows anyone to find out certain publicly available information on domain names. A WHOIS search can reveal information such as:
- domain name owner - registration date - expiration date - contact information - domain servers - current registrar

Oh I see! Thanks Hermas
Apparently my domain name is available to buy! I only registered it last week though.

Its a database where all details are maintained and it is a rule of ICANN to maintain that.
If you wanna checkout visit http://whois.domaintools.com/<Your Domain>

That would be upsetting! I'd act on this immediately.
Take a second look and make sure that minor details such as the extension (.com, .net, .biz, etc) are the same as yours. Make sure that the spelling is exactly the same. See if there is a dash between words or not and so on.
I hope that you find a difference in the one up for sale. If not, be sure to contact your registrar and discuss the matter with them. Let them know where you think it's up for sale.

Hi NS
On closer inspection it's the same domain with no dashes (phew!)
It's fascinating. It has all my details including how many domains I own, have owned and from which IP address. It's quite cool really

redsadie: On closer inspection it's the same domain with no dashes (phew!) If this is a domain that is going to be a main site for you, it would be worthwhile to go ahead and purchase the one without the dashes, too.
If you use NameParkIt you can redirect it to your other url and also use subdomains for all the affiliate links you plan to place on your "dashed" site.
One handy thing about using subdomains as an affiliate redirect link is that if you have a program change or cancellation, you can just change the destination url of the subdomain and make site wide changes of all those links at once.
I wish I had done that with my chocolate site. Ugh! I have an affiliate that recently canceled their affiliate program. Now I have to go into 70 pages on my site and remove the affiliate links.
Using subdomains isn't the ideal way to handle this, but at least it is one solution.
Anyway, just a thought. Blessings, Angie
