It depends on what it is you are marketing...you might want to be more specific. Certain markets it's good for, others not.

I never have but it sounds like a very risky thing if you do not know what you are doing.
I have always heard that great copy can really pull in the sales but great copy writers are very expensive and there is still no guarantee of success.
I wish you luck.

Direct mail? I'd stay away from it if I were you, unless you have lots of money to spend on advertising. Consider this:
For every 100 pieces of mail you send out, you MIGHT get a 3 to 5 percent response rate, and that is only if your mailing lists are targeted. You might not get ANY responses. Publishing costs are very expensive, not to mention postage, and if your mailing lists are not targeted, or if they are out of date, you can kiss your advertising dollars goodbye.
If you are going to try and reach a lot of people, you might as well take advantage of the internet. You can try ebay, or you can try Google Adwords - but I have to warn you that Google Adwords is tricky, and if you don't do it right or learn from the right resource, it will burn a hole in your wallet, and fast!

getagrip is correct in her assessment of direct mail marketing. Very few people, in my limited experience, respond to it. I did two campaigns for a former non-profit employer and out of 350 targeted businesses and people, only a handful respoded.
You may save money by creating your own sell sheets, press releases and cover letters, but even so, you're looking at postage costs as well.
Unless you are already established and have a large budget for marketing and promotion, you'd be better off using blogs, link exchanges and direct word of mouth methods.

You can also look into turning your direct mail approach into some form of opt-in email style marketing.

If you have already built up your optin mailing list, this is a good option

I've used direct mail in my real estate investing business. It has worked very well for me. I used the plain black&white post cards at the post office web site: usps.com. I would target my mailings to landlords and out-of-town owners or an entire neigborhood. I would sometimes get as much as a 30% response rate. It only took one real estate deal to make enough to cover the costs of many, many post cards.
I'm considering using this service for network marketing postcards: www.mlmpostcards.com Anyone here ever tried them? It's Cutting Edge Media. I don't know how they can print and mail them for only two to three cent each.
