Hi,
I'm just starting a business, and I need to know how to get started without spending a lot of money on a web-site, logo, business cards etc. How do you figure out what you want your logo to be?
I have a jewelry making business, and I want to sell on e-bay, but also have a web-site??? So confused!! I do not have a ton of money to get started with so I need to do it myself. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Josh

I also just started a business about a year ago. I asked a lot of questions, and got a lot of great answers, and help. When I went to do my web-site myself it isn't as easy to me as everyone said. I still do not have it up!

I do know how to help you save money on logo's and brochures if you would like to e-mail me you can, and I will send you samples of the work. They usually charge 300 - 500, but I can get it for 100.00, and you get 4 - 5 samples to look at.

If you figure out a great easy web-site let me know. I wish I could just find someone to finish what I've started. I put a lot of time into it, and I still do not have a web-site. I get asked every day what is your web-site address, and I have to say it is under construction. (I've said that for a year now !!)

Good Luck in your new business!

Hey guys,

One place to start for a free website is http://www.freespaces.com As the name implies, it is free. Not a lot of ads all over the page either.

Your website name will be something like "yourwebsite.freespaces.com" You don't get a domain name, which is preferable but there are plenty of templates to choose from.

After you get settled in, and see how you like having an online business, you can always get a domain of your own.

Just a suggestion, and only one way of starting for free.

Good Luck,

Joe

You should look at http://www.elance.com to bid on a professional logo. I have used their services with success. I paid $100 dollars for a logo and banner there.

For an free logo you should check out http://download.com.

I have noticed starting out with a free website like geocities it's tough getting picked up by the search engines. I find it helpful to use blogger.com to drive traffic to my websites. They seem to get indexed quicker and can lead to more traffic. Just remember to submit them to the search engines.

Josh, if you are not very fussy about your site, you can find ready-made templates for a small fee. Just do a search on Google for "Website templates" and you will come up with tons of sites selling website templates.

For logos, I recommend gotlogos.com. For $25, you get a decent logo done for your site.

On website design, you can get a free website tool at nvu.com. Please note that you will need to spend a couple of hours to learn their tutorial...but its 100%free.

As far as banners and other software is concerned - even web page software - check out download.com. You can download just about everything there for free, but you only are allowed to use it for a few weeks...if you like it you have the option of buying it after the trial ends...I highly recommenf their site.

Hi there Josh,

There are several ways to start up a web site but if you want it to be easy and effective then you should use a program to do most of the work for you. A program like xsitepro which you can find at http://www.xsitepro.com would be very usefull for you. It would take you no more then a day to set up a complete goodworking web site. You don't need to know any html to build it.

Also, since you want to sell hand made jewelry, you shouldn't worry to much about the logo, this you can either create yourself with a free paint program or, as mentioned before in this thread, hire someone at elance. For your customer however this logo is of no importance. They are more likely to be interested in your products, like price, quality and originality, instead of in your logo.

You are probably better of focusing on building an effective web site then just building one that looks good but doesn't sell. Once you have build your first site, make sure to build different versions, test and see which one converts best for you.

Hope this helps,

Harrold

hi josh,
I would recommend using a basic template with logo etc already in place - you can find a lot of free ones on the net and cheap ones.

find one that suits your business.

Hi Josh,

A lot of good advice so far, but I would just like to ad that if you use the free website, where you will have the web address like "yourwebsite.freespaces.com" it doesn't look very professional. I know of someone who purchased a program on http://www.increaseonlinesales.co.uk where they bought a complete package, everything they needed to create their site was there, it even included the rights to sell the software program, which included the website already in template form, for them to use.

Hope this helps.
