I'm considering setting up a double-opt-in email form on my websites, but I'm wondering if people are starting to get blind to these as they are to ads?
I know I see an email form on every site I visit nowadays.
And once you rope them in, do you think people actually read your emails if you're part of a massive website?

Hi Lars,
It's probably a good idea to use one if you feel you can handle it. It's no small task - another time hog. But many feel it's well worth it.
Trick is, you absolutely have to provide consistant value to your list in addition to providing valuable content on your site and everything else a one-man show has to handle well.
Plan ahead or you'll lose a lot of subscribers.

I have the same problem with email lists as I do with blogs - coming up with unique, quality content every single time.
I belong to a lot of mailing lists from various internet marketers, and I always find it amusing (and annoying) how quickly they seem to run out of steam and then start writing any old rubbish just so they can throw in an affiliate link...

I don't think a double opt in is necessary. It also depends on the niche of you website. You obviously see a lot of opt ins on internet marketing type websites, but you might not see that many in other niches.
One thing you could do to be a little different is re-direct visitors to different pages of your website via your emails, and you can also create ebooks and give them away for free via your emails.

Are you visiting work-at-home or internet marketing sites? I'll bet you're right that there is an optin form on pretty much every site. That's why most people suggest you start in other niches. Look for how to raise chickens sites and you won't see a ton of optin forms. The same goes for waxing your own surfboard sites, or anything that isn't totally played out.
When people are just in the niche research part of a new project, I'm always amazed by the number of people who don't visit the first 10 or 20 google results for the keywords they are targeting. Take a niche like forex and you'll find optin forms everywhere. This means the niche is full of competition. That doesn't mean you can't make money, but you've got a crowd you need to stand out from.
Now, take a smaller niche like the do-it-yourself surfboard waxers. There might be only 5000 dedicated fans of this niche but with a little work, you can get most of them on your list. You're the only voice in that small niche, so anyone who's listening is listening to you - and by extension, anyone who's buying based on internet recommendations is buying based on your recommendations and shooting you a commission.
Disclaimer - Like far too many internet marketers, I've pulled the niches mentioned in this post straight out of my ass, so don't complain to me if you set up a surfboard waxing site and it doesn't make you any money.

Likewise but I hope that some will be patient and thorough enough to start doing the required footwork.

Excellent observation. Not a single step should be overlooked or rushed.

Homeboy: same problem with email lists as I do with blogs - coming up with unique, quality content every single time. That's exactly what I've been pondering... I'm thinking I'll acquire a bunch more experience, knowledge, and products/ebooks (perhaps of my own creation) before I dive into emailing.
Homeboy: I belong to a lot of mailing lists from various internet marketers, and I always find it amusing (and annoying) how quickly they seem to run out of steam and then start writing any old rubbish just so they can throw in an affiliate link... I've noticed this too, even when I can tell they really know what they're talking about for the most part, so I'd rather not make a fool of myself haha.
getagrip: create ebooks and give them away for free via your emails. awesome long term goal, or maybe shorter term if I come across a few books which authors allow you to give away.
Great conversation MOB and NS. As with all things in life, there must be balance. In this case, balance between researching/learning, and putting your knowledge into action thoughtfully, patiently and persistently.
