Hello,
I have tried many online biz opportunities spanning years of time (and lost lots of money) and haven't found something that works without requiring a huge monetary outlay, either upfront or over-time. (Monthly fees)
I am now laid-off and seeking something online that works without a large capitalization. UI (Unemployment Insurance) does not last long and my severance is going fast.
Any help/advice would be very helpful.

There are a lot of different opportunities out there. Personally, I have had the most success with affiliate marketing, although it hasn't been without its challenges, and it does take hard work. It could be a good thing to learn while you are collecting unemployment, however.

There are some things out there right now that do not cost a lot of money to start and if you are diligent you can make money. You just need to do your due diligence and actually talk to people who are doing the business that you are wanting to do. You will get a feel of what it really takes and if it would be the right fit for you.

What are you looking for exactly? If you know, that is...
Do you want to work from home? As in telecommuting or freelancing?
Do you want to have an online business? Like affiliate marketing (which cost nothing to start but needs a lot of effort to generate traffic if you go on a low budget)
Do you want to earn a little extra cash adding up to your UI? Like Paid-To sites, surveys, stuff that make you do online stuff for pennies an hour?

Hi Time,
Learning how to start your own online business takes time. You can do it on the side until it takes off but you'll have to find another way to pay your bills in the mean time.
You may be able to use a free lance site such as Elance or similar. But even with that, you probably won't be able to pay your bills. I suggest using a temp service until your online business takes off.
To begin the make money online learning process you might spend a few days reading through some of the threads on this forum. Then you might go take the free 30 Day Challenge at:
www.thirtydaychallenge.com
That will provide you with a free glimpse of some of the online marketing fundamentals. Keep in mind that it's only the beginning.
After that, you might come back here and ask for further guidance.

Honestly, if I were starting with NO money, the way to go would probably be selling clickbank products with article marketing. It's proven to work, so no need to re-invent the wheel, but it does require you to have some kind of decent writing skills.
If article marketing is too difficult, the other option would be to get your affiliate links out there using forum signatures. Forum posts are of course a lot quicker and easier.

Well - there you go - lots of great advice!
I am just popping by to say yea and amen - I have done a variety of things from paying over eleven grand to get into a home based business, to smaller scale mlms and I am hooked on affiliate marketing myself.
As you can see, not all of use the same 'tools' to do affiliate marketing with, but most of us do use some sort of training or guideline and if you are to embark on the 'affiliate journey' I would advise you to do the same.
Find something that fits your style and then run with it - as getagrip mentioned - it is not without it's challenges, but it may be what you are looking for, who knows.

Hi TimeMan,
What online biz ops have you already tried? It would help to know what kind of experience you have already and how much knowledge you already have under your belt.
As most of the other members have already noted, it definitely takes time to build a steady online income. It's probably not something you are going to be able to count on in the short term.
However, if you use your free time to work on it, you can definitely build something worthwhile in the long term. It's not so much money that needs to be invested as it is time and effort.
You just need the right tools and instruction to follow and a bit of perseverance and you can establish something for yourself and your future.

I've tried several supposedly good online biz ops, including going to Robert Allen's free seminars, only to find out that they want thousands for their materials. All they needed was one or two suckers, and that free seminar was paid for with a cushy profit for the speaker. They made more off the people who paid for the "Kit" than what the kit buyers would make off buying and selling real estate in a depressed market, such as our economy is now.
I've even tried to be a movie extra, of course not until I had paid the money did I find out that my state doesn't have any movie jobs.
I have plenty of time to invest in building a biz for the long haul, just not the funds to expend in the short term.

I have to agree with everyone else-- affiliate marketing is free to get started, but it sure requires effort. If you are going to do that, get yourself a blog started or get an active community on twitter or other social networks so that you can get your links in front of more people.
And if you get back into the home based business field, start slow and make that a part time income until you can get things going. You may want to try article writing or other telecommute jobs to pay the bills until the home business is self sufficient.

I'm sorry to hear that you were one of the victims of those expensive seminars. I suppose they may be helpful to some, but the only ones I ever hear raving about them are the click of people who put them on. I've never actually heard of someone who is brand new to online marketing say that they started with a great expensive seminar and it was the key to their success. 
When I was looking into earning some extra money online, I ran across a free affiliate marketing ebook course that explained how to go about building a niche website targeted to a very specific topic.
By building a content rich website in the correct manner, you can get plenty of free traffic from the major search engines. You then can earn money from a variety of different ways from that traffic.
You can sell your own products or services if that's what you prefer, but you don't have to have your own product to sell. In affiliate marketing, you can earn commissions just from referring people to other people's products or services.
You can also earn money from Google Adsense or other similar advertising programs where they pay you for allowing them to advertise on your site, etc.
That's just a couple of the options. If you were to build a site about your local area (if appropriate), you could get involved in all kinds of business relationships with local hotels, tourist activities, etc. There really is a wide range of ways to make money from a good niche website.
The only real investment you would have to make money-wise is paying for your domain, hosting, and site building tools. The rest is your own sweat, blood, and tears.
It's possible to get a very cheap domain and hosting and use some various free tools available throughout the web. I didn't have a clue how to find, differentiate between, or implement all of that on my own, so I paid $299 for a yearly package that has it all set up ready to go and easy to follow instructions for getting it right.
I figured it was a reasonable investment to build an online business and I am happy to say that it was money very well spent. My ROI the first year was 5 x's that amount and way more since then.
It's slow going getting started, but if, as you say, you have the time to invest for the long haul, it's well worth your time, money, and energy.

If I get into multi level marketing, will it jeopardize my unemployment compensation? I can't find the answer anywhere so I thought this forum might be of help.

Hi Timeman,
I also vote for affiliate marketing. I am having success with it! It does take time each day to market it effectively. You have to be patient and not expect to get rich over night. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to go with.

Sorry to hear about getting laid off. I went through that several years ago and it can be rough.
I have to agree with many here and recommend signing up with Clickbank.com as an affiliate which is free and begin to promote the thousands of products available to you with article marketing.

If you have the time to write 4 to 5 articles each day then it is possible to make several thousands monthly from article marketing.

Once I make enough money to afford the $300 package, then I'll go that way, but until then, it's to the free and/or cheap packages. Thanks for the ideas, though.
I've selected a couple things to try out: Zero2Riches and Project Payday.
Am also learning Dreamweaver to create a master Domain webpage for online businesses.

It's taxable income and it depends how much you make.

Basically I'm concerned that if I make, say, $50/month in mlm in the first few months, that I may risk losing my entire unemployment check since mlm means I'm a "business owner" and it is my understanding that business owners can't collect any unemployment. So when you say it depends on the amount made, does that mean I can make a little bit in MLM (say$50/month) and still collect some unemployment?
That would make MLM an exception to the "business" disqualification in some cases.

Hi Obipawn,
That's the part you'll have to look into. Call the I.R.S. and consider asking your state department of revenue. I doubt they'd cancel your unemployment unless you exceeded a certain level on any given month but ask to be sure.
What may happen is as you make progressively more money, they'll decrease the amount of your unemployment checks. If you hit a certain level of income, then they may cease to send you unemployment checks.
But it may not work exactly that way and that's why you should ask the government. I've never had unemployment checks so I can't say for sure how it works. But I do know this: you won't be stressed if you call them and discover the truth ;) Call early in the day so you don't get put on hold too long.

Tell me about it. I've had the exact same experience as yours in terms of trying out many opportunities and loosing tons of money. Personally I would suggest that you only get involve with programs with no or little up front investment. There are only a few of those programs and it would be a great idea to do a little bit of research. Then what you can do is to re-invest a portion of your profit to another program that would also generate you more profits. I personally have done this strategy and it has worked quite well.
