G'day All
I am a 27yo Male from Sydney Australia, and "No, a dingo did not eat my baby". I am also a Capricorn for all you Astrology buffs.
Being a newbie, I am just trying to establish what options I might have, as far as picking up some extra work. I am not looking for a get rich quick scheme.
I have provided a bit about myself below, so if you have any ideas, please let me know.
- I currently hold a 8.30am to 5pm office job, so I am looking for something that I can do of an evening, early morning or weekend.
- I have a laptop and I rate myself pretty highly with Microsoft Excel.
- I have some website management experience (not programming) and I have a little html knowledge.
- I feel I am quite good at critiquing websites, as far as look, usability and funcationality is concerned. In fact, if anyone has a website, I would be more then happy to take a look at it for you, and offer some ideas (For free of course).
- I am good at problem solving, and coming up with new ideas.
- I have some knowledge of affiliate marketing, however this is something that I would probably prefer to stay away from.
- I am quite good on the keyboard.
If anyone is able to provide me with any advice, it would be much appreciated, as I am just trying to work out the best place to start, based on my abilities and want to try and avoid any scams.
Cheers
Jake

G'day Jake,
I'm in Australia, too. Up near Cairns. But I'm really an American by birth, so my G'day sounds a bit funny.
I utilize affiliate marketing on my websites, as well as a bit of direct marketing, etc. You don't HAVE to "do" affiliate marketing if you are opposed to it for some reason.
Do you have a product you can sell or a service to offer? If so, you can go that route. Build a website around that particular niche (make sure it's based on good keyword research and is built with both the search engines and visitors in mind).
If you'd rather just do "jobs" for other people, you can go to elance.com, getafreelancer.com, rentacoder.com, etc., and bid on specific projects there. That may be more what you are looking for.
Hope that helps. Blessings, Angie

I am also a newbie maybe we can share.
Went I got hook on making a living from home I could not write, not even in my own language. I am 47yo from Canada father of 4. I've joined just about everything that out there, "don't do that".
I will do by best to describe my offer to you.
I am part of a coaching program that is cumming to a end. I'm having a real hare time making it, because of the technical part of it and my writing is not helping.
I am ready to give you access to this coaching, that cost me $2000 US, if you'll help me.
You'd end up with your own products, 7 websites a list building website all of this product are in the Internet marketing niche.
Ones you will have completed the training you would have all the knowledge to go into any niche you like.
I have to say, you would need to buy 7 domains some hosting and a autoresponder to apply all is required.
I am not shour that my coach would approve of this but I don't see why I could not have a partner.;-)
Let me know if this is something that could interests you by replying here.
Sincerely.

I recommend selling something that still has value and demand. Affiliate marketing is more of a long-term project. You may not see results for months, even years, depending on your niche and the competition out there.
You need cash sooner rather than later that has worthwhile pay.

Jake, I'm not sure if you are still reading the replies, but if you are, let me reply to your entire message. If you notice in my profile, I am from Texas and "no, I don't ride a horse to work." First, I will tell you about myself: - I am a 23y/o male in the US who also works 8am-6pm (IT Consulting means a lot of paperwork) and I enjoy many nights out with my friends
- Although my studies in college were pretty technical, I am no where close to a programmer and your html knowledge beats my zero website management experience
- I have a passion for helping people. And I'm not trying to lure you in by saying "I just want to make you happy!" But my passion is volunteering and seeing the smiles of those less fortunate. In fact, the reason I am on this forum and growing my home business is to raise money so I can devote my time to a Social Entrepreneurship three friends and I are trying to start.
- Basically, with respect to the six billion people on the planet, we have a similar skill set.
MY ADVICE: So, my advice to you, since I have walked in my own shoes and I have experienced what has and has not worked, I would recommend a business with a couple of things: - Very low start-up costs: If you are paying more than $100 then you are probably paying too much. - Most of your 'investment' needs to go towards Marketing!!! Almost every company in the world spends a great deal on marketing. Microsoft just spent $300 Million on a commercial with some TV stars. - If you see no growth in your business, wait a little bit. If you still don't see growth, ask for advice. And if you still don't see growth, buy a case of beer and think of something else I know this seems a little vague and, quite possibly, generic; you are more than welcome to contact me for more of a discussion. *This is my second post on this website, so I am a little nervous on what I can and cannot post*
Good luck- Happy New Year- Cheers, Bryan

Thank you everyone for your advice, it has been most appreciated.
I don't think affiliate marketing is for me. I have experimented with it before, and although I have no doubt that great money can be made by affiliate marketing, I just dont feel that it is for me. Although great money can be made doing it, its not really the money that I am doing it for, I want to find something that I enjoy and that I am good at.
As I said previously, I am quite confident in critiquing websites, and suplly people with ideas to improve their website, increase their traffic, and ideas to improve their business overall. It is just a matter though of finding out the best way to put this into action.
Once again, thank you all for your posts so far.
Cheers

Hi Jake,
Have you done any research on the demand for website critics? If there is a decent demand, why not go for it if you enjoy that type of 'work?'
I think the best way to implement that type of plan is to build a website yourself that will pull in traffic for those looking for yours service. That gives you two benefits.
1. It will give you credibility to show you know what you are talking about and would be worth hiring.
2. You'll have clients coming to you for help.
I'll send you a link via pm that will give you some further reading on the subject.
Blessings, Angie

Thanks Shield,
It's still in the infant stages as I'm learning the ropes of coding, but so far, so good. I have a feeling it will end up being my favorite site, regardless of the income level each one produces. It's more "me."
Blessings, Angie

Hi Jake,
Hope your still reading. I am glad that your not looking for a get rich quick scheme, because even the ones you can make a lot of money on are still a lot of work, especially in the beginning. As long as you realize this going in you will be fine. Bottom line is you will make more money is the sales of something if you are good than anything else, so dont shy away from sales as long as its a product you can get behind.
Hope this helps

Hello Everyone,
I am a newbie to this forum, but I am enjoying it so very much! There is a lot of knowledge on this site. Affiliate marketing is a good way to make some money, but you must have money to begin with for advertisement. Of course, everything you do comes with a fee it seems. One day I will be done reading and then I will have to develop the ideas in my head. I too would like to tutor those that are trying to learn about computing. On the flipside, I have websites, many websites that work automatically for me. I just enter the orders.
