I have a free account with 110mb.
Are there any negatives to having a free hosted site?
I mean, will my site get crawled by search engines and have the same chances at being successful as a site that is hosted for a fee.
I guess my real question is, how important is it to have your own domain name as oppossed to a free one with the host added to it?
For example, my site is xxxxxxxxxxx.110mb dot com.
I'm happy with the service, I'm just not sure if I'll have the same results as if I buy my own domain.
I'd appreciate some advice.
Thanks.

To be frank, there aren't actually any positives to go for a free site.
Free sites rarely add any credibility and I think search engines too wouldn't give much weight to free sites. There are exceptions when you find some free sites in search engine results pages but those are very old and have good backlinks.
A domain costs not more than $10 per year. If you are even a bit serious about your online endeavors, don't hesitate a meoment to invest in a domain name.

Man get a paid hosting and domain ..
You can get a hosting for as low as $4 per mos. and $2 - $10 domain / per year ...
If im not mistaken some hosting company gives you 1 "Free" domain of your choice ..

The only free places that work are like a blog or Squidoo which tend to rank better with the search engines, but they don't look so much like a website so if that is what you are looking for, then you got some great advice here.

Hi Philip,
Vishal is right - free sites aren't as professional as paid hosting.
With paid hosting you have quite a bit more control over ads, layout, content, etc.
Just make sure you've learned enough before you try it. It should be one of the last things you try after you've mastered the fundamentals of marketing and experimented with free sites for a few months.
Good luck,

Thanks for the advice.
Now I'm just worried that if I promote my free site, I'll have to kind of start over with a new domain.
If I set up a redirect on all the pages of my free site domain to a new paid domain what can I lose?
Is this a good plan to transition?
Thanks for the help.

Not much more to add, except that free hosts are also notoriously unreliable as far as uptime, and they can shut down / modify your website at their discretion, which is both annoying and deadly to any attempts at a stable online income.

I have been reading the post and have to disagree somewhat with many of the replies. I think that a free site can wor if you market it the correct way. Many of the post are taking into consideration that you are trying to get the highest ranking on the search engines. Now if that if you major goal then having a hosted site can help a bunch. But I have another option.
In the home based business arena there are many ways to advertise. This forum is on of them. If you brand yourself well and post frequently on forum like this and the many other that are on the internet you will find that if some looks your branded name up these forums rank high on the search engines. In addition you have to factor in who you are marketing to. If you are looking for other businesses owners in a recruiting model I think you can use places that have video such as Youtube and sites that are similar.
Traffic exchanges have worked extremely well for me. I create a good lead capture page with a good video included and when the prospect fills in their info they are directed to my site. This site can be a free site or a hosted site it doesnt matter.
Another place I have gotten high traffic from are from my free blog as well as many of the link referral sites. My blog is great as it is hosted by a high level blog provider and gets great rankings. The link referral sites are great as people get more traffic to their site by looking at and reviewing my site. Now many of the members are already business owners but if you offer something to them that they need you can get them to your sales site. I get a great amount of traffic by offering free leads to business owners.
I think that if you have the correct marketing strategy you can use a free site to your advantage. Now of course many of the hosted sites arent that expensive so if you can afford to use both then do so and promote yourself well.
I hope my post helps you some.

Having your own domain to do your business look more professional than a free site.
