It depends a lot on the your target market. I think article marketing is getting saturated in highly competitive markets like "work at home". In such cases, posting on high quality forums with good traffic can give you very good returns.

Traffic from forums are instant and they don't take ages to build credibility unlike article marketing. But then it's not a do once and forget job. You have to keep posting regularly.

The problem with most forums is that outside of "work at home" or "internet marketing" forums, they usually won't allow you to use your signature to link back to your website.

Cool thank you, great answers. Does anyone make a decent living exclusively with forums?
Do you ever run out of things to post? haha seems like it might get kinda hard to maintain interesting discussion without being painfully repetitive.

Hi Lars,

I think that most people tend to use several methods to drive traffic and increase sales.

If you know your subject and are wise enough to continuously learn, then you don't run out of things to say.

It never gets "painfully repetitive" yet I do repeat things I've said before when someone new asks a question I've answered previously. I don't mind at all.

I suggest you learn to make use of every method you can find - forums, blogs, Squidoo, Hub Pages, various new and trendy Web 2.0 sites, article directories, etc - to network.

I enjoy this forum quite a bit. I like to learn and help others. Lots of fun people here - the social aspect is great.

Learning about efficiency is wise, but the first order of business is mastering the fundamentals of online marketing.

Also, it's very difficult to find one with good traffic in relatively less competitive niches.

Thank you Newbie Shield.
I love the idea there's a constant flow of new information, techniques, products, services, medium, etc. to learn, grow and distribute material.

The internet is a truly amazing place
Now that ya mention it, it's fun spreading advice, even if you're teaching the same lessons; can't foresee this getting old.

I've got most of the bases covered for the various techniques (blogs, articles, squidoo, hubs, etc.), I was just curious to see how worthwhile forums are for the business aspect. I never plan to stop using them for networking, learning, and socializing, but do they really generate significant income if used correctly?

ohh, and what are web 2.0 sites? new to me
thank you anyone with answers!!!

Hi Lars,

You're welcome and you're right - the internet really is truly amazing. I've been living on it more than any place else since the mid 90's.

Forums are very much worthwhile. Lots of folks are able to send traffic to their sig links and many make a decent amount from affiliate links right in forums.

Web 1.0 is more of a traditional static one way message site something like a commercial on TV whereas Web 2.0 is a social platform that focuses on interactivity largely via two-way comments.

Good examples of Web 2.0 are blogs, Squidoo, Hub Pages, and I would argue that forums should be included on the list (though no one but me seems to have included them perhaps since they were already out there before the buzz word hit the net).

In my short experience, less than a week, I would have to go with forums. You get your link out there right away, people don't have to read through a whole article to get to your link, and there usually is no review period for a forum post.

Depending on what article site you use, it could take a week to ten days to get your article published. That aside, I have used both articles and forums to try and get my link out there.

In my experience, articles are the way to go. Once you get it up, and hopefully indexed in the first few pages of Google, it's likely to be viewed many times. Forums take more care and nuturing, as you have to become trustworthy to the other members before they will start to believe in you and what you have to say. In my opinion, it would take longer to build that kind of trust in a forum than in articles.

First of, Hello every one here.

I started article marketing a few weeks ago and I can say, from my experience that they are a great way to create back links, especially if you can write top quality articles and some one just decide to reprint them on their sites.

Forums and social networking sites are also good.

Why not combine both.? I've personally received tons of traffic through forums and articles. It great to have two powerful marketing tools working together. You will surely receive more traffic that way.

Just a nugget from personal experience - I've had decent traffic from articles, but far more immediate results from forums. Article marketing takes a while to build momentum, you really have to be persistent about it...

My assumption would be that good articles rank much better than forum posts and are more permanent, which would make them attract more traffic and send more traffic through your link.

Im of the mind that both article marketing as well as forums are to be used to be successful in online marketing. Creating good articles can brand you as an expert in your field and being an expert always helps.

Using forums allows you to market your product to a targeted group of people and network. Networking is the key to being successful online. On this forum are various members that create a substanstial income online and have large groups. By networking you might lure "the big fish" into your group and they will bring with them an instant list to you. In addition the big fish usally congregate in the same ponds so they have relationships with each other. You might lure a few big fish by posting in a forum.

I also sugges that you have a program that is useful to other home based business owners in your arsenal. I offer free leads which is something everyone needs. By offering this free service I get a ton of sign-up and create a list of subscribers I can then market my other products and programs to as they have gotten to know me.

I prefer forum posting more than article writing. I get quicker results with forums and it is much easier for me to do. As I am not a big fan of writing. Not to mention all of the information you are able to learn from forums.

I'd say that article posting can work better than a forum posting, if you have good content only. Otherwise forums posting is more effective. You can leave more back links via forum posting.

Hi Lathalukose,

You can go to Google and type in a topic followed by the word "forum". In your case it would be "childrens books forum" to locate a desired type of forum. You can also try "childrens books discussion" or anything similar.

It works for any topic as long as there is a forum in existence for a chosen topic.

So true, but if you link to an informative page in your sig., (A page that you have created), that is high in informative content and low on hype and ads, and you are a trusted member of the forum, you may yet be successful in forum marketing in many niches.

I can't say which is best, both are good and many successful online marketers utilize both methods.

Hi everyone,
I also think that articles give u more traffic but forums works well for people who hate writing like me.
However, its very important to keep posting regularly!

Awesome feedback everyone :) Thank you.

After reading the general consensus and from my progressing personal experience, it looks like a combination of both is a great idea. Forums generate immediate clicks and offer great networking and information. Articles take longer, but generate more residual, low-maintenance income if you provide high quality, high quantity info with sufficient SEO and promotion.

Am I correct?

Great discussion and very interesting points of view.

One of the best business lessons I've learned over the years is:"You should never limit the ways you can generate revenue." Consequently, my position is that forums AND article marketing ought to be part of one's marketing arsenal. Bottom line is that they each deliver traffic.

But, as AteamFunTimer points out, each one gives you slightly different advantages as well:

ateamfuntimer:
Creating good articles can brand you as an expert in your field and being an expert always helps.

Using forums allows you to market your product to a targeted group of people and network. Networking is the key to being successful online.

So, since no one method is complete by itself, the two should be used to compliment each other. The more you become known as an expert through writing articles, the more effective you'll be at networking with targeted groups in forums.

Asking which one works better, will give you different answers, depending on which marketer you ask. And those answers would be more a reflection of his or her preference, skill and results, rather than a verdict on which method is actually more effective.

It's safe to say I'm not going anywhere :)

Article writing is becoming a hobby as well as a profession for me, it's nice. And I'm very happy to be part of helpful communities with occasional monetary benefits such as this forum.

I think it's reallyyy cool that you can use writing and networking skills to avoid expensive advertising campaigns.

I think this fact opens a lot of doors for brilliant people with limited resources. Article marketing and similar techniques are great examples of the American Dream :) Anyone with great ideas and unique strategies can make their own name and claim their own success.

Great posts here,

I agree, you have to diversify. Make it a point to attack both each day. In addition dont rule the video out from your daily work, its powerful. Keep at it. consistency is the key.

Too many people are answering "both."

For someone who's not looking to make a full time job out of working online then you want to focus your efforts a little bit more deliberately.

I personally have had more success through various forums, but of course it will vary person to person.

I agree that a combination of both article writing and the use of forums is best to promote your website and affiliates. Writing articles is more time consuming but the permanency of your articles online is a huge plus. Networking in forums helps a good deal as well.
