Last week I was talking to a friend of mine & I mentioned that I was going to get some business cards done for my 2 online businesses & she said that many people tend to put cards in the back of their wallets or throw them out, Now when I look at it I can understand what she is saying & this friend of mine who owns a business herself but not online suggested that I get some fridge magnets done to promote my businesses.

I live in a remote area of Australia & some of the towns in our area would have less than 50 houses so with this in mind should I get fridge magnets which people would keep or should I get business cards or even both, If anyone else has done this kind of marketing then share your experience with all of us I'd really like to know how you went at this form of marketing.

Hi Cas,

When I get a biz card or biz magnet that I don't care about or don't like, I toss it.

Perhaps some people would keep a fridge magnet and actually use it. I don't know. It depends upon their budget and personal preference I suppose. That may be something you'll have to determine about your target audience.

You might get both if you intend to give a seminar to a targeted audience. You can include them in a grab bag or folder for each member of your class or audience.

I wouldn't waste my money on an untargeted audience.

I have always found that business cards at meetings or seminars look better or more professional. The fridge magnets might be a good idea for friends or acquaintances though?

Business cards are always a must as you can keep them handy and it is the professional way of doing business. You can hand them out easily to people you meet. Fridge magnets are mainly used to follow up. For example, you can mail out a fridge magnet to a customer/client as a thank you.

Hi Casper,

There is no guarantee that just because the magnets are useful that people will keep them. I would definitely get the business cards and if you have the money to get the magnets you can get them also. Look at the business card first as a marketing tool and second as a contact form; if someone only needed your contact information they could put it in their address book. Some people will throw it away and that's fine, it's a small loss compared to a potentially large gain.

If you are still concerned about people throwing away your business cards, create or have created for you a unique, interesting design that makes someone feel as though they shouldn't throw it away. That's what I've done with mine, not so much because I'm worried about people throwing them away, but because for every person who says "wow, this is a really nice card," that opens the door for a little bit more conversation and a little bit more room in their brain to remember me.

If you want to see my card send me a PM with your email and I'll send it to you.
