Alot of people have been telling me to get into social networking eg facebook etc but I was just wondering if you are not that type of a social butterfly what other methods can you use to get people interested in your business.

Write some articles, post to online classifieds, create a Squidoo lens, etc.

Article marketing and forum marketing work great if done properly.
However, forum marketing has some limitations. It's difficult to find forums with good traffic in every niche. And even if you find some, they may or may not allow signatures.

Dose anyone know some good site where you can submit articles as I find that if you advertise on free classifieds you get bombarded with spam.

Thanks for the answers. As I am still in the learning stages I was just wondering if someone could clarify exactly what you mean by writing articles and article marketing.

Casper,
You can submit your article to www.ezinearticles.com. It is a good article directory that you can get traffic from.
BigD,
the natural of the Internet is delivering information. People online because they want to get some kind of information. So if you write some articles on your expertise, provides the information to them, then they will trust you. This will attract them to your sites.
Above is the general theory of article marketing.
Let me show you a good site to learn article marketing

You have gotten some really great information here - the bum article stuff is good.
What happens is once you have some pages out there on your stuff and you have articles floating around plus a blog or something - and they are all liked together, it creates sorta like your very own little (or big) 'internet web' online and as you keep adding to it, it keeps drawing traffic to your website for a long time.
Another tip on writing articles - don't get all stressed out over it - just write a short 300 word article and submit it to a couple article directories like ezinartles , goarticles, ideamarketers and if you want some really good walk thru training on all this try the potpiegirl affiliate training.... which focuses on using articles, Squidoo, and blogs...
That's what I started using and it has driven traffic way up for me (and sales - which is what it is all about, eh...)

You can use article marketing on free article submission websites. I manage to make good money by posting articles related to my business. One of the best article websites is Ezine Articles very popular. One of my first articles ever posted as a newbie to online marketing got me 1 sale in 2 days. The real secret though was that same article over the course of one year got me 12 sales.
The point is the more articles you write the more chances you have to make sales. Imagine just for example purposes if I wrote and posted 1 article every week. That would be 52 in a year and if each article resulted in 10 sales for a total of 520 based 52 articles. You would have sales of 520 times your product or service cost (ie: 520x30=15,600).
You see where I am coming from......

Really good tip! The more you spend your time on introspection, the less your output will be. Just do it! You'll gradually master it.

Just for the record, a lot of article directories require a minimum of 500 words per article, but EzineArticles.com is ok if you use only 300.

Hi BigD,
All of the above advice is great so I won't repeat it.
You don't have to be a social butterfly to join and make good use of social networks. It does help but it isn't required.
You just have to "socialize" a little at first to get exposure to your works. Than you can stop and move onto something else.
It does help to continue socializing from time to time, but you can still get a lot out of it if you just draw a little attention to it at first.
I don't think it's any where near as much as you seem to suspect. It doesn't have to be a FaceBook-like site. That one tends to be quite a bit more chatty than most.
You could start out with Hub Pages or Squidoo. After you make your first page, you sign up for the forum with your page link in your sig file. Folks will visit your page simply because you chat a little on the forum.
You can get even more attention if you give someone feedback on their page and then create a new forum entry asking for some feedback on yours.
You just need to contribute a little first. Then the members of the community will reciporicate.
You'll get additional bonuses for doing so such as indexing, traffic, sales, etc...
Give it a shot.
