Hi Mum,
It's a metrics script created by Google designed to help you track your site visitors.
You can use it in a number of ways to improve your flow and conversions. It also provides visitor statistics.
It's a tad sophisticated and advanced, but it's worth the study time 
You might consider looking into it once you are well into the intermediate stage of online marketing and you've had a self-hosted site up for several months.

You get this option on your Adwords account when you choose to upgrade for free to "Standard" from "Basic"

A very strong tool in your internet marketing, I would implement the code right away if you have a website. Great for researching your target market.

Hi Loomis,
More isn't always better - especially not at first.
Beginners are struggling to identify and understand the basics. They are decidedly quite overwhelmed with information overload and more than their fair share of fear.
I value the tool but it would just add to a beginner's difficulty.
Many folks haven't even tried a self-hosted site yet or they just put one up. Instructional comments should be put into perspective and carefully worded with the general level of the community in mind. There are always exceptions but this isn't one of them.
Metrics are important but the more sophisticated ones are for the intermediate level and the expert level. Google Analytics is not a beginner's tool as a whole.

Newbie Shield: Google Analytics is not a beginner's tool as a whole.
Definitely right. Statcounter is fine for people who just want to track basic visitor information and where traffic is coming from. But by the post Mum2haley made, I don't think he/she is even considering using either of them

I agree on it being difficult for beginners when I did the google analytics lesson in the 30DC I never did understand it, even after I did it twice, so I decided I would come back to it later on after I understand basic principles first. It's a cart before the horse thing.

It's absolutely necessary to get used to Google Analytics. It can tell you whats working and what isn't with your internet marketing as well as help you understand what the user is doing once they visit your website. Take the time to get used to it and learn the ins and outs of it! It can help you focus your time better when you realize that some internet marketing simply isn't working.

I guess my view on the internet is to throw yourself into something, I find that is the best way I learn.
Maybe google analytics is for the intermediate level, but either way its a great tool and it will do anyone looking to make something of their online endeavor a ton of good to learn.

I've heard some people are using Clicktale.com
It gives you some nice details such as where your visitors are coming from, how much time they are spending at your site, and it even has movies you can watch of what each visitor looked at while checking out your site.

I signed up for Google Analytics recently and find it very informative, granted you have a steady flow of traffic to your website. If you have just started a new website for the first time it would be pretty confusing and you are better off concentrating on increasing the traffic first. Overall it is an invaluable tool and you can use it along with your Google Adwords campaign.
