As sleazy as it may seem to some, when the president visits a state, businesses try to take advantage of a obviously unique opportunity. Store owners see the President as a short term cash cow for their failing businesses and so they try to sell President Obama memorabilia. As worn out as the sale of President Obama memorabilia is in most states, its sale will always do well when he is in town.
So if you are a store owner in a state where the President has plans to visit, then you should try to advantage of it. Instead of waiting on a bailout or the stimulus plan, bail out yourselves.
For people in Florida and Indiana, the President visits your states on Tuesday 02/10/2009 and Monday 02/09/2009 respectively, so if you have interest in selling memorabilia, now is the time to plan for it.
Even if you are not a democrat, take advantage of the opportunity, as your political beliefs should not be a stumbling block to you earning extra income.

I continue to be impressed by Barack Obama, and a lot of what he is trying to do in these early weeks of his Presidency.
However, selling Obama commemorative plates and medallians is not my idea of doing business! That was done to death during last year's election. There are many better ways -- look around this forum.
Obama is right that this is the worst economic recession that the USA (and many other countries) have been in for 35 years. Selling porcelain flatware with somebody's picture on it is NOT the answer.

I agree Executive. I think the blantant exploitation of the Obamas(escpecially the daughters) is beginning to go way overboard.

I get the legitimate memorabilia, but they just don't seem to know where to stop. One or two collectible coins and even a few plates would be acceptable. There is no reason to have a collectible coin, plate, t-shirt, bumper sticker and "bean bag" doll for EVERY "Obama first".
Yes, it is an historical event, but people don't need separate coin each and everything single thing the President does, (personally I'm holding out for the coin that commemorates the historic first use of the Oval Office bathroom by an African American President).
Many of the people buying these items are led to believe that they are actually valuable. They may have some value 1000 years from now, once many of the collectibles have been destroyed or lost, but it won't happen any time soon. These are people that are struggling to pay their basic bills, but they are shelling out thousands of dollars for these "collectibles".
As far as being good for the economy, it's NOT. Almost ALL of these items are made overseas. The"US Minted" coins aren't even American made products! Sure, the coins are minted here, by the US Treasury. However, they would be minted regardless of whether or not they are turned into "collectibles". These coins are bought for face value from banks before they are circulated and then sent overseas, where the labor is cheap, and turned into collectibles and then they are sold back to American companies at a HUGE mark up.

Guys, I hear you, but this is a short term opportunity that should not be squandered, and not something you can invest in for the long haul.
If these items did not sell during his visits, do you think that store owners would stock their counters with them. I know many store owners, one of which saw a 30% increase in sales today alone because the pres. was in town. For him, this was a short term bailout.
All his Obama stuff sold out and until sales of these items decreases, people should take advantage of it. Yes, people have gone overboard, but that is because there is still good income earning potential, be it short term and sleazy.
As it relates to the ideas on this forum, I would agree that there are better opportunities than what has been described in this post, however, being in business means examining all business opportunities, even if it is short term.
