Research, research and more research... That is all I seem to be doing. I am new to profit lance and I have enjoyed all the tools given to me to do all the research needed to get started but I haven't come across one niche through the hundreds I have looked at where the competition doesn't far out weights the customer searches by well over a few hundred at least. Maybe I am calculating wrong but this seems to always be the case, is it normal in todays climate of high internet use and a boom in its marketing sector to experience these figures? Is this line of work exhausted by the Michael Andrews of this world and his thousands of clones? I hope not and thanks for taking the time to read this post. This is not a rant but a genuine question!

Hi goldholder,
That's a fair question and one probably many people have getting started. I think you may be missing the big picture while doing your research. Let me see if I can explain.
Most of the time, the MAIN keyword you search for in relation to a niche is going to be higher supply than demand. I'll use my chocolate site as a "real" example.
----Sidebar---- (These numbers are from the brainstorming tools in SBI which aren't as simple as a basic Google or Wordtracker search. They're more accurate. I thought I'd better clarify that up front in case someone runs a search using some other 'tool' and gets different results. Also, these numbers are about 6 months old.) -------
For the term "chocolate candy" the demand (D) is 18465 and the supply (S) is 19931.
It might seem like that is a bad niche choice. HOWEVER, there are a couple of hundred related keyword phrases that DO have good numbers...
chocolate fudge candy D=2026 S=684 dark chocolate candy D=2261 S=535 cherry chocolate candy D=841 S=84
...and so forth. Those are sometimes referred to as "long tail keywords" that you can build pages (or write articles) around to get traffic easier.
So, you don't just want to look at the MAIN keyword phrase when considering a profitable niche. You need to look at the big picture. Are there enough other related keyword phrases that will all work together to bring you targeted traffic?
I hope that makes sense to you and may help you find a good niche.
Another tip: Think about something you really enjoy already. If you are an enthusiast for some particular sport or hobby or special interest, it's a good place to start. You are going to be spending a lot of time with your subject so you may as well enjoy it.
Blessings, Angie

goldholder: Where do I get the tools that you use that you mentioned? "These numbers are from the brainstorming tools in SBI...." I'm afraid they are only available through SBI. It's part of their site building package.
They provide the brainstorming tools, site building tools, hosting, domain, autoresponders, step-by-step action guide, etc., to build a successful web business all in one package.
They have some good free resources for understanding affiliate marketing (I'll pm you a link), but access to the actual tools is only available to those who purchase and build a site through them.

Ok, I have to buy SBI before I can do real research? Is there another way to calculate the market balance without SBI? PL mentions using the search results in overture and dividing the amount you get when you search it in Yahoo, is it yahoo's shopping results or simply Yahoo... This is accurate enough says PL but like I said, I'm getting a big number, well into the hundreds when PL says I should remain under 150.. Thanks again
Goldie...

goldholder: Ok, I have to buy SBI before I can do real research? Certainly not! You can do 'real' research with other tools. You just have to buy SBI if you want to use their tool.
There are other keyword research tools that you can purchase. I just use the SBI tool because I do own SBI.
I don't have PL, so I don't know exactly how they teach you to crunch the numbers. I've read a lot of comments in various forums though regarding keyword research, and the majority of the consensus is that you probably need a paid tool.
Some people pay for 1 day of Wordtracker's upgraded version and cram all of their research into that one day.
You can use the free tools like overture, wordtracker (free version), and Google Adsense keyword tool, etc., to concoct a general idea of supply and demand. It may not be as accurate as paid tools, but it could still guide you in the right direction.
My main point was that you have to look at a whole range of related keyword phrases, not just the broadest phrase.
Blessings, Angie
