What number of Web Directory submissions do people recommend for a new web site?

Hi Andy,
I don't know what other folks recommend, but I try to get in 20-30 directories (I manually submit to them) and leave it at that. It seems to do the job.
Of course, you it's best if they are somewhat related to your niche, but it is not always easy to find that many niche directories. After you exhaust the niche directories, you can submit to general directories, but in the category that your niche falls into.
Same goes for links in forums. Related niche forums are better than non-related.

Well I'm not really sure, I've just manually submitted to 140 Directories in the last 2 days for my new first website!!! Wasn't sure if that was enough!!

Also, at what point in time would you put Adsense on a new site? i.e. after how long?

Good heavens - you've been busy!
That should be more than enough. They probably won't all list you, but that's not a worry.
SBI recommends that you wait to add any form of monetization (Adsense/affiliate links, etc.) until you have at least 30 pages built and your getting at least 20 unique visitors a day. I have followed that advice and have been pleased with the results.
I've read posts of other folks who couldn't wait and began monetizing too soon. They regretted doing so.
Realistically, if you consider percentages, you really aren't losing much by waiting. If you don't have the traffic, there is nothing to monetize.
What's your site name (don't make it a link, just put the part after the www. if you don't mind me taking a peek)? Of course, you could put it in your signature and give yourself some extra back links.

I've included my new (1st) website in my signature. I'd be interested to see what you think?! It took me a week to do and I've not built a website for the internet before, so still learning everything!

Great! I am really impressed. I could never have managed that in a week with no prior experience.
I would have been completely lost without SBI and their step by step instructions. 
As much as you would like to go full steam ahead with monetizing, I'd wait a bit if I were you. Keep adding more info. to the site. Do you know how to do keyword research?
Find out what phrases people are typing into the search engine to get information on wireless routers, etc.
You can then build a page for each of those phrases. Even if the info. is similar to each other, you can spin it to present it in a different way or different order, etc.
That's the best way to get targeted traffic. You will get listed in the search engines for the results when people type in those words.
Have you submitted your site to the major search engines yet? That is another thing to do. It is fairly easy to do, but it may still take a couple of weeks for each page to get listed.
This business is definitely one of patience. You keep following the steps and then waiting for the results.
Have a look at SBI's action guide in my signature. You don't have to buy SBI to use it, but you can definitely learn the basic steps to build a successful site.

Sorry, I should of mentioned I'm a web/database developer. BUT - I'm only used to building data driven websites and NOT designed sites for the internet. Having said that I know HTML, CSS, Javascript etc very, very well - so I guess that will help!! I'm not particularally great at the content and web design - but I'm getting there!!
With regards to the keyword research - I've been following the advise on Profit Lance, but still need to read a little more on that.
I'm not really in that much of a rush, am prepared to wait. Just not reall sure at this stage of the timescales for certain things to happen, e.g. when does Google index your site etc...
I've also submitted to virtually all search engines I know of!
Its all good fun though!!!

It is fun, isn't it?
I suppose every site is different, but I think I generally get indexed in a week or so for the home page. I only submit to Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.
I let the rest pick up eventually if they want to. 
After that, my pages get spidered as I build them. Actually, SBI automatically submits each new page for me as I build it after I've submitted the homepage manually. I would say some of my pages have taken a week to get spidered while others have taken a few weeks. I'm not sure why exactly that is.
Of course, you have to be sure your pages are all linked together so they can be spidered, but you probably know all of that.
I'm not really familiar with PL, but I gather they would teach similar principles about keyword research. Hopefully, they have provided you with keyword research tools so that you can determine the supply and demand of the most searched phrases. Then you can start building pages around the ones with higher demand and lower supply.
You have a distinct advantage of already knowing what you are doing with html, css, and all that. I've learned a bit of html, but I'm really no good with "codes and design." I pretty much have to stick with the template options available in SBI, because I haven't had the time to learn all the ins and outs of the codes.
I've dabbled a bit when I've seen some of the fantastic sites other SBIers have come up with uploading their own html, but I've opted to forego that side of things for the time being in exchange for actually building more content and trying to maintain the sites I've got going. Not enough hours in the day sometimes. I'm probably going to pay down the road since it seems CSS would save so much time in the future when you want to make a site wide change. As it is, I'll have to do each page individually. Ugh!
I started laughing when I first saw your site. (At myself, not at you.) I recently had to switch from ADSL to Satellite here in Australia. I'm stuck using my PC all the time because I haven't figured out how to setup my wireless router with my satellite connection and my notebook. That's why I laughed. I'll have to go back and have a good read of your site and see if I can figure it all out.

Thanks again Angie for your help and advise. Its really fun watching the "site visited" figures rise etc......using the hosting tools!! And today I've noticed Google has indexed my site!!! Whooohooo!! It hasnt took long - the site went live on Sat (1st March) and its indexed today.
Have now submitted to around 155 Web Directorys (its getting a little tiring now lol). I'm just going to sit and watch the traffic coming in, maybe add some more pages.
I hope the site is of some use to you also!!!

Hello!
Well, to rise in google SERP, submitting to web directory is an important step. Remember few points while submitting to web directory
1. Submit to the directories on topics of your website
2. See wether the webmaster of web directory accept links from any website,. ie from poor websites even, or screen and put links of quality websites only.
3. See wether the web directory is backlined from quality websites. This will make web directory more credible. Sometime web directory owner accure low quality backlinks in a short period to get some PR and flash it.
4. Submit your website to most appropriate category.
5. Lastly if you have to spend some money to get one way link from directory, go for it. Atleast, not more then $5 per link if you have funds in initial days.
There is no limit of link submission to directorie, do it slowly so that it appear natual to google, may be 25 to 40 per month.
If you are low on funds then you can put adsense right from start so that the money you earned from your website can be put in again in its promotion. Otherwise, hold on for some time so that your website can develop some viewership, then you can put adsense on the appropriate places.
