Hi everyone
I have been working my way through the PL course for the past 3 weeks and although there is a fair bit to take in, I can honestly say that I am enjoying it! I am however completely new to internet marketing so there have been a few occassions where I have been left a little puzzled. Finding this forum has cheered me up though as there seems to be a lot of freindly and helpful advice around.
There is one thing, at this stage, that I was hopeing one of you could help me out with, and I can only hope that you are not sick of guys like me coming on and asking such basic questions.
While working my way through the project series and in particular the "finding unexploited niches part", Mike mentions how much easier it can be to get ranked in the search engines if you can aquire the domain name. However as I have no idea how to go about setting up a website (difficulty, cost, etc), I would much rather start of with a blog. Also as I am new I don't want to go down the Adwords route just now and would rather try and generate natural traffic.
So I suppose my question is, is it just as easy to get a high search engine ranking if I have a blog with .blogger for instance, as part of the domain name as if I had a website which had the same domain name but minus the .blogger? And also, is it possible to do all the same things with a blog as with a website. i.e. multiple page blogs, videos, images etc?
I hope I haven't rambled on too much and thankyou in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Sounds like you are having fun there.
The nice part with a domain name is that you can get whatever you want with godaddy and then have it forwarded to whatever you like - either a blog or a website.
With a blog, you can write tons of blogs and if you are good with keywords, you will probably rank higher than with a website as google likes the blogs.
However with the websites my personal opinion is that it is easier to have everything more organized... but then that is just my opinion...lol
Some people like blogs and others like websites - you can do the same thing with both for the most part...
Make both and then put a stat counter on both to track your traffic and see which works best.

Blogs are a great place to start, one reason they are free and secondly if you make any mistakes (which everyone does might i add) they are of no financial cost

Thanks for your advice Mountainmom. From reading through the PL course, I am familiar with godaddy and how to check for available domain names. However I did not know that it was possible to forward that same domain name onto a blog. Does that mean that if I set-up a blog using blogger, that I can use a domain name that doesn't include .blogger? Also if this is the case then how do I do it? To be honest Im not even sure if this is an important question, as Im not sure if having .blogger included in my domain name would affect my search engine ranking anyway.
I think your right Hemjoe with regards to starting out with blogs, as Im sure I'll be no different to everyone else and also make mistakes!
Thanks to both of you for your advice. I am determined to give this course my best shot to find out if internet marketing is for me, and I really appreciate any advice I receive along the way.

You can purchase your domain through Blogger and it will actually be with GoDaddy. I know this because I did it. I own my domain on Blogger so that it isn't a blogspot it's a .com or you can buy a .org, .net or whatever. Or you can get everything free and use blogspot. I prefer to own it so I can transfer it if I want. If you are concerned with ranking higher I suggest Wordpress. If you want an optimized Wordpress you can check out ninjablogsetup it's free as long as you use his link to purchase a web host. That's what I did and it was a great option since I know nothing and can't set up anything.
So you would pay about $10 or less for a domain and $10 or so a month for your web host to have a fully optimized blog ready to go that will rank higher than blogger or a website if you can study up a little on keywords, backlinks and write good content. My 2 cents.

What you say about Wordpress ranking higher than Blogger is very interesting. Just a quick couple of questions.
1. With regards to the $10 per month for web hosting, would I have this to pay if I set-up a blog using Blogger with a domain name from Godaddy?
2. Also what do you mean when you say that you prefer to own your domain so that you can transfer it?
Im sorry if these are basic questions, it's just that I am a complete newbie and really don't have a clue when it comes to setting up a website/blog. Trying my best to learn though!

You don't pay for hosting on Blogger they host it, but you can own your domain name. If you go with Wordpress.org you will have to pay for your own hosting and domain, if you choose Wordpress.com they pay for hosting like Blogger. Then there's Wordpress Direct which isn't going so well at this time, too many bugs/quirks in Wordpress' new baby. In time may be worked out, but not yet. I don't recommend WD at this time.
It is best to own your domain and have your own web host to go with it then you are free to do what you want. If someone else owns the site what they say goes and they can shut it down at their discretion. I don't know about you but I don't want to do months of work and one day my site just be gone. I hope this helps you decide what's best for you.

Sorry I forgot the last question on transfer of domain. If you own your domain on a site or blog, let's say you own your domain on Blogger and decide you want to transfer it to Wordpress then you're free to do so. Which is something I'm considering right now.

Thanks for all the help Sonni.
I think I am going to start out with Blogger, just to keep the costs down at this stage. I will take your advice regarding the domain name though and purchase my own. It definately seems to make sense and should be well worth the $10!
Just out of interest, how are you doing with your sites? They both look really good and I think your exercises one looks something like the way I imagine mine looking one day. Thats if I can get a blog to that stage. I haven't even decided what product or service I want to promote yet! lol
If theres any other advice that you feel a novice like me could benefit from at this stage then please don't hold back.
