Hello. I know that some of you have been featured or advertised in magazines such as HBC. Has anyone had luck with advertising in these home business magazines? I found a discount place (I think it was listed in my back office) but still not sure I want to dish out $725 a month unless I am getting the business.
Any comments on magazines or even newspaper listings?
Thanks, Judy

Hey Judy,
I was featured in the November 2006 issue of HBC Magazine. I also was featured in 6 months of Home Business Advertiser Magazine.
In a nutshell - Home Business Advertiser was a total waste of money. Bobbie Schwartz, who own the magazine is a great guy, but I didn't get the kind of results I was looking for. He made unauthorized changes to my ads...I simply was not happy with the overall service of the company.
HBC Magazine has had alot of features for Coastal, but overall I don't believe many are getting the best value for their dollar. There's a Coastal co-op, but it's about $15 per lead.
3 line and 4 line ads work, BUT will mostly attract people who do not have computers. This has been my experience...Hope I've saved you the $700+ investment you would have made.

Hey Judy,
My wife April and I were featured in the May 2006 HBC and have had great press from that feature ad. I for one have never seen the need to join the co-op they have. Im more for quantity of leads. In my experience ive found the penny leads to be the same quality as the premium leads. Cant tell you how many times ive spent $10 for a premium lead only to have them answer the phone and ask if I was the person they should talk to about their free ipod. UGHHHHH!!! I just spent $10 for that. I say the lead is only as good as the person working it. Thats why the call centers do so well. Many Coastal Directors are horrible on the phone. I know thats harsh but its the truth. There are many reasons for it and its not their fault. Many never had any sales background. Now everyone will say this isnt sales but HELLO we SELL a product so it is SALES! For many that need to make money asap it can get frustrating to call and call with no results. I say this....if you are good on the phone or can learn it then you should make your own calls. Momma told me long time ago God bless the child that has his own.
But back to print advertising. Id say that first you should venture on the internet and try some free advertising. See what works then spend the big dollars to put a good ad in print. If you are good at ad writing then jump right into the fray but if this is your first crack at it try the free stuff first or maybe the inexpensive ones first.
Hope that helps.
Adam

Offline advertising works well if you have a brandable name, otherwise free online advertising is better

I agree with Jay on Home Biz Advertiser.... Bobby is a nice guy and all, but I only made a couple sales for the money I put out on that mag and I was on the cover like 3 months in a row...
I would not go with display ads, unless it is more target, for example a magazine entirely dedicated to travel, and preferably a local mag, with not a lot of ad competition.
I would put the ad so that there was a tear-off sheet that people would need to send to you with $5.99 s/h for a free report, which you send them back a CD/decision package. Then follow up with a sales call to ask for the money 4-7 days later.
Display ads in the Mags are tough... unless you have deep pockets... and you already know your ads work good and pull, don't waste that money.

Hello
My experience with magazine ads was that even tho' the response rate was excellent, however the quality of the leads were poor. The majority of respondents did not have computers or even access to them, which created a challenge with getting information infront of them.
Personally I would not put my money into 1/2 page or full page display ads again. However saying that, smaller niche newspapers and niche magazines, like Jeff mentioned with no competition are still worth the money.
hope this helps

I agree, niche newspapers and magazines are a good place to advertise, but make sure your ad is written with a specific niche market in mind each time according to the magazine.
However, I wouldn't advertise on free magazines and newspapers; most people that read those don't have the money nor the mindset to start a business; they are most of the time looking for a job.

What you say is true, the mindset of the person is important

Absolutely. We have to know what type of market we are targeting and which magazines they frequently buy. If not, we will end up wasting a LOT of money on advertising that doesn't work.

Yes and as many choose to use free advertising online....I might add that alot of the free places to advertise online get about the same results.

I think that you should leave every option open. Free classifieds have worked for me. They arent my only option though as the percentages arent as high as other methods. But lets look at the facts. Just about everyone will spend over $1295 in say the next 3 years on vacations. I think that is a fair assessment. So even if they dont have a bunch of money this is a good value. How many times have any of us overspent our budget because of a good deal. Look at it another way. When a person sees the value in something they will spend their money. So push the value. How about telling them to get some help with the initial price. I had a person with little money get his family all chip in $100 so he could get his package. He then just gives them all vacation vouchers when they want to go on vacation. Were there is a will there is a way.
Dont give up on the free stuff. Its not the most effective but it does work. Think of that person that wants Coastal to be there way out and spent their life saving on getting in at the highest level like alot of members promote but then doesnt have alot left over for advertising. Free advertising might be their only option. Lets help as many as possible and leave as many options open as we can.
I will say that I do understand where the other posters are coming from and they should also be listened to as they are leaders and have had great success. I just say lets open our mind a bit and understand it never about the money it takes to get started but rather the return on the investment (ROI).

Hi Adam,
Thanks for replying. This is why I stated on my post that free ads don't work "For us, at least". I'm glad they work for you. While we don't do free classified ads we do agree that some other methods of free online advertising work, like blogging.
The best about free ads is that they are free; you got nothing to lose except for your time if you don't get a sale from them. We like to spend our time on methods that are already working for us. Some of them don't cost me money, like building websites, but cost me a lot of time and skills.
I do like Craigslist for classified ads. You do get traffic and calls. And like they say, a lead is a lead is a lead. No?

Here's my nickel on this one. Come in a the lower level. When it comes to this business, I let everyone who calls me know that most of my team members invest $85-$150 within their first 30-60 days on marketing. If someone doesn't have an extra few dollars or so for marketing - they'll want to come in at a lower level.
We all agree that the L2 and L3 are better options, but let's not bleed our new team members dry on the membership and now allow them to have money to invest in marketing.
