There is a program called googlesnatch.com, where the guy claims one can advertise on google without paying for it. Is this another one of those elaborate scams?

Yes, it's possible.
There are several ways to do this:
You can have an image listed in Google Images.
Your site shows up in a Google search.
That's just two ways.
However, you haven't really provided enough information. I'd need more details in order to challenge his claim. I wouldn't pay for this guy's program. Still, technically, he may be making a proper claim.

I don't think its a "scam", but it makes me wonder if some of the techniques it talks about will get you banned by Google since they mentioned black and grey hat strategies.

One of the best pieces of advice I received through the SBI tutorials is, "Keep It Real." I don't know what this guy is offering, but you can chase after one thing and another and never really end up with a quality business if you are not careful.
Like any offline business, I think if you just build yourself a legitimate online business (site) based on something people actually need or want, you'll do okay in the long run.
Just my 2 cents.

Greetings all,
Google Snatch is overpriced, poorly-written waffle. The sales page is very wordy and persuasive (as all good sales pages are), but it misrepresents what the book contains. It says the book has nothing to do with SEO, but that is ENTIRELY what the book is about.
Yes, you can achieve good search engine results using the methods presented, but they are labour-intensive and have been around for years. There are no "secrets" as the sales page suggests. Beginners would find a lot of the info confusing and contradictory. I'm not saying it's all bad or that the info is "incorrect", just that that far better guides are around and that most if the info you can find out for yourself, for free.
You'll find lots of glowing, positive reviews of GN. Nearly all of those are written by affiliates, which means they'll earn a big chunk of the $97 you fork out. Nothing wrong with affiliate marketing - I do it myself - but beware!
Save your money.

Google Snatch is an obvious scam. Why? Just go to google and search for this product, it shows up in the sponsored results. If the book claims we can do without it, then why does the book itself need a sponsored ad? Does it make sense?

Well, I think the author is claiming that he gets free PPC credits - what you are calling sponsored ads. That was his whole point, not that I would buy his program.
So, no, what you are saying actually does not make sense, sorry.

These ads are placed by affiliates. They either didn't read the book or found that the techniques didn't work. Ironic, don't you think given that the book is supposed to teach you how to avoid using Adwords.
Do a Google search for Google Snatch review. Note the listing which is currently at #2 for affiliate-sales-programs.com. That's mine. The ranking was achieved without using any of the techniques in the book.
